I was in the Early Years after degree BEd program at the U of M with Shannon. We shared a lot of laughs in our T01 cohort over those years. Condolences to both her home and her school families at this sad time.

I know I should write a few words about what Shannon meant to me, but it’s not possible to do that in just a few words so, here are my many words.

We all have different identities in our personal lives and at work. Shannon and I have worked together for many years in many schools while she was a teacher, a behaviour teacher, a resource teacher, and as a vice principal. I’ve seen her as my friend, as a friend to her colleagues, as a co-worker, as an employee to the boss, as an expert to the parents she served, and as a leader to our school team, and, regardless of the pressure to act otherwise, she has always been true to herself and her ideals. Despite her different roles or the various difficult situations, I’ve never once seen her anything but authentic to her personality, her values, and her beautiful spirit. I haven’t met a more genuine person, and I’ve admired her for the courage that takes!

You didn’t have to know Shannon for very long to know that she lived authentically while always considering others’ needs and doing her best to treat everyone with courtesy and respect. She was never more abrasive with a child, a parent, a colleague, or a team just because she thought that’s how a leader gets things done. Even in the most stressful situations she stayed her funny, down to earth, welcoming, nonjudgmental, patient, and calm self.

Shannon taught us all by example that you don’t have to be prefect to make a difference in someone’s life, you just have to care. To care is to love and Shannon had a lot of love to give. It was hard to be just acquaintances with Shannon because she made people feel like lifelong friends after meeting for the first time. We all know that you can be a part of a person’s life without making an impact, but Shannon showed that there’s a lot more to being in somebody’s life than just being there. She was intentional about making a positive difference in the lives of her students, colleagues, and friends. She always led with kindness and freely offered emotional support and encouragement to students, parents, friends, and colleagues. Shannon’s caring ways were simple but always made you feel important. She showed her students she cared by being involved in the things that helped them grow. She sincerely cared about friends’ and colleagues’ lives, their health, their mental well-being. Funny end of the week memes, a simple joke, a shared laugh, a kind word, a shared drink at the end of a hard day, a supportive email all had an impact on my life and were the ways she made me feel cared for. If you ever find yourself wondering if she made a difference in the world, just know there are hundreds of students, teachers, and school psychologists whose lives have been made better by her understated intelligence, generosity, and loving spirit. Not many people can positively impact as many lives as she did.

Shannon had just the right amount of professional. Everything she did was without ego, so she had the strength and openness to deal with problems quickly, which made her a great administrator. She was honest with herself and with others, she was willing to accept the consequences of being true to what she considered right, and she took responsibility for her mistakes. As a result, you could always trust the judgements and decisions she made. Yes, you could trust that she would communicate honestly and say what she meant, while respecting other’s needs and feelings, but she was not a stuffed shirt either. She was funny and so down-to-earth she’d also freely laugh her big contagious laugh at the occasional off-colour joke. I will always admire her quiet inner strength and respect her for all that she did to make the world a better place for those around her. I will miss her dearly!

How can mere words express condolence in times like this
However, lack of words does not mean lack of heartfelt caring and that is what we so wish to express.

We got really close one weekend on being able to attend and be blessed on a dinner invite to Ken and Shannon’s just lately but, sadly, things didn’t work out for that weekend, and a future date was in the works. Val and I were really looking forward to it – I believe a beef roast was on the menu!! I’m sure it would have been super yummy and that we would’ve really enjoyed the fellowship too.

We just wanted to thank everyone for the kind words and sharing what she meant to you. Shannon was an incredible human that gave so much of herself to her family, co-workers and friends. Shannon meant so much to many. The road ahead will not be easy for any of us and I wanted everyone to know that for the family, reading these messages brings great comfort. It is touching to read all of the memories from people that she grew up with, went to school with, shared her life with, and worked with.
