February 11, 1932 ~ October 30, 2023

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, Dave Germain at the age of 91 at his residence of East Gate Lodge in Beausejour surrounded by his family.

Dad leaves to cherish his memory, son Lawrence (Carolyn), daughter Michelle (Tim), grandchildren Maxwell, Mikaela, Quinn, Bradley, and Owen.  He also leaves a brother Louis (Lorraine), sister-in-law Madeleen, and many nieces and nephews who he held near to his heart.

Dad was predeceased by the love of his life, Beverley of 56 years in 2015, parents Rudolf and Olga, sisters Jean and Joyce as well as brother in -laws Clarence, Lloyd, Chuck, Mike, sister-in-law Lil, Diane, niece Elaine and nephew Alan.

Dad was born near Leduc, Alberta and moved with his family to the Beausejour area at the age of 15.  This is where he fondly talked about doing farm chores, clearing the outdoor rinks and skating for hours, before walking home again.

Dad met Mom in 1958 at a wedding and in 1959 Mom made “an honest man out of him.”  In 1963, Lawrence was born and in 1967 Michelle was chosen to complete the family.

Dad worked at many jobs including a laborer on the expansion of Seven Sisters generating station as a Steam Shovel fireman, working on a ship on Lake Winnipeg, driving truck, becoming an autobody mechanic to owning the John Deere Dealership in Beausejour.  His last official job was working as a senior storekeeper at AECL in Pinawa.  Once retiring from AECL, Dad wasn’t quite ready to sit still so he looked forward to harvest time with the Mroz family. He anxiously awaited those phone calls for help which gave him purpose and joy.

Dad was very creative and could fix almost anything.  He was an avid fisherman and had a keen interest in antique tractors. He could recognize any model but was most fond of anything “green”. He and Mom loved their time at Nutimik Lake and camping with family and friends.  Later in life their adventures changed and enjoyed card nights with Dan and Lil, and Roy and Dorothy.

He wore the titles of Dad, Grandpa, brother and uncle with pride.  He loved chatting with the grandkids, watching them grow, being a chauffeur, being their #1 cheerleader at hockey games, soccer games, and even managed to stay awake at a few dance and piano recitals. He was so proud of each of his grandchildren. He looked forward to visits from “the kids”, and his brother, Louis and would repeatedly asked “what’s new with you?” hoping to find out the latest news.  Sometimes the stories were repeated but he always reacted with excitement and interest.

Dad was a straight-shooting man who believed in good manners and treating people with respect. He would drop anything to help someone in need.

Dad, you were one of the good ones, honest, forthright, funny, not one to suffer fools.  We will miss your Dave-isms, the twinkle in your eyes as you smiled, and your generous gift of love.  We were proud to call you Dad.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at East Gate Lodge for their professional, kind, and compassionate care they provided to Dad in his final years.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Michelle and Family,

My most sincere condolences on your Dad’s passing. I don’t know that I made the connection when we met at Pinawa Hospital years ago; but your Dad was one of my very favourite Store’s people when we worked at AECL many years ago. He always managed to brighten up the day. He will be missed by all who knew him. Sincerely,

Janice Hoffman

Condolence from Elaine Merke on November 5th, 2023 11:28 am

to all of Dave’ family close and extended,

Whenever we had the chance to visit Lloyd and Madeleen and Dave and Bev were there we always had a great time. Both your parents were great people and always made us feel like part of the family.

Since Lloyd passed and Madeleen now lives in Bsjr, we don’t see people we used to know very often, but have often thought of the great times we all used to have at everyone’s homes, Miss those days the most.

Keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers as you travel through the difficult days ahead.

Elaine Merke (Gerald)
