June 25, 1932 – October 29, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Joseph (Joe) Radewich of Prawda on October 29, 2023 at 91 years of age. Joe lived his final years at the Poseidon Personal Care Home in Winnipeg.

Joe is survived by his wife Nellie, his daughter Doreen, and his son Glen (Paul Bernardin). He is also survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mike and Diane Shewchuk, many nieces (Cheryl, Debbie, Keriann, Val) and nephews (Barry, Brad, Brian, David, Wayne), and many other family/cousins and friends.

Predeceasing Joe was his mother Caroline, his father Joseph Sr., his sister Helen Nazar, brother-in-law Mike Nazar, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Alex and Mary Shewchuk, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steve and Lena Shewchuk.

When Joe was in his youth, he always dreamed of being a professional baseball player. He often mentioned that if he did not have to work on the farm as a teenager, he would have liked to pursue this dream because he had been asked to play for a team in Winnipeg. Locally, he played for a team called the Birch River Rockets and in its very last game, he often told the story of how he hit the final ball and scored a home run.

Joe married Nellie (nee Shewchuk) in 1958. They lived in Medika initially and then moved to Prawda where Nellie still resides. For most of his career, Joe was employed with the Manitoba Department of Natural Resources for 33 years, first stationed in East Braintree and afterwards in Hadashville. After he retired, Joe engaged in some crop farming for many years which he really enjoyed.

During his leisure time, Joe enjoyed hunting, trapping, archery, family road trips across Canada and the U.S., and woodworking. Indeed, one of his best skills that he was very proud of was carpentry – he could build almost anything, including the family house in Prawda.

On the artistic side of things, Joe loved music, especially country songs and Ukrainian/Polish tunes. He taught himself to play the violin, guitar and harmonica. At the other end of the spectrum, he was interested in modern technology and became fairly adept in using the computer for various purposes.

Over the decades, Joe was actively involved in the local community. He volunteered his time and energy to numerous events and activities that were held at the Reynolds Community Club in Prawda, including power toboggan races, poker derbies, turkey shoots, and flooding/maintaining the ice skating rink.

Cremation has taken place last fall. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Birch River Community Cemetery in Medika. A luncheon will follow at the Reynolds Community Club in Prawda.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Joe’s memory can be made to the Reynolds Community Club, Box 12, Group 15, Prawda, Manitoba, R0E 0X0. Alternatively, since he loved animals, a donation can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Lastly, as Joe would often say: “There you go!”

Condolence from Mary Galus ( Radkewich) on November 22nd, 2023 2:14 pm

Sorry for your loss, folks. I have a question. How could Joeseph be related to me? Radkewich is not a common name. My dad was William Radkewich. He was born in Stepan, Ukraine ( then Russia) in 1903 and passed away here in Canada in 2003. He immigrated to Canada in 1930 and took up a homestead in Alberta. I have done some genealogy on my family background and discovered that my great grandfather was Joseph Radkewich. Could there be some connection from the past.
