August 1, 1958  ~ January 20, 2024

It is with great sadness that we say good bye to Carol Lynn Hay (nee Fiebelkorn) after a long and courageous battle with cancer with her husband Tom and daughter Christy by her side.

Carol is survived by her husband of 47 years Tom, daughter Christy Smith and husband Neal, grandchildren Grayson and Emmett Smith and Kayley and Kierra Hay.  Pre-deceased by her son Jason Hay on February 1, 2023; parents Karl and Gwendolyn Fiebelkorn and just recently her sister Brenda Otto.

Carol grew up on the family farm on Hwy 317 in Brokenhead, attending the school there.  During her early years Carol enjoyed playing baseball, hockey against the boys from Beausejour and Ukrainian Dancing.  In 1970 her dancing took her to center stage where she danced for Queen Elizabeth II at Dugard’s Park.  Not a stranger to a stage she entered as a contestant in the 1976 Winter Farewell Carnival Queen Pageant.  Starting in the 8th grade she continued her education at Edward Schreyer School.  However, it wasn’t until grade 9 when her life with Tom began; dating all through high school, getting engaged when Carol was just in grade 11.  Once she graduated, she was excited to officially start her life with Tom and they were married on October 16, 1976.  Carol and Tom feel so blessed to have had 47 years of marriage and over 50 years all together.  While Tom was busy starting his career as a painter in the autobody industry, Carol began her working life as an underwriter at Canadian Indemnity Insurance in Winnipeg.  It was here that she honed her amazing typing skills reaching speed of 98 wpm.

On February 9, 1980 her and Tom welcomed daughter Christy Lynn at St.  Boniface Hospital.  In 1981 Carol, Tom and Christy left their home in St. Vital and moved to Beausejour into a new home they had built.  It was also in this home that she spent her final days.  In November 1981 she put her typing skills to use and began working at the library in Beausejour.  A few years later Jason Thomas was born on July 3, 1983.

Carol and Tom enjoyed spending time together as husband and wife so much so that they became business partners as well.  In 1990 they formed Kolors Autobody Supplies.  During the early stages Carol continued to work a couple of days a week at the library conveniently located right next door to “the shop”.  In 1991 as the business was growing, she quit her job at the library and began working at Kolors full time as DA BOSS.  Eventually Kolors grew so much that it was time to leave the small rented space on Park Ave. and moved to a building that they proudly built and owned on Selch Street in the Beausejour Industrial Park.  As business and life partners they ran Kolors for 31 years until their retirement.

Over the years Carol wore many hats but at the top of her list was being a wife to Tom and a very proud mother to Christy and Jason.  Watching her children grow and accomplish so many things like their high school graduations when they received their diplomas and threw their caps in the air brought her great joy and made her beam with pride.  Always having a knack for helping others she also served as a Sunday and Vacation Bible School Teacher, Brownies, YBC bowling and managing her children’s soccer and hockey teams.  Carol also valued her Christian Faith so it was very special to her when Christy and Jason were baptized, confirmed and married in the Lutheran church.

As her grandchildren were born her beautiful brown eyes shone brighter and her smile and joy grew bigger from the moment she first held each of them for the first time.  It was such a beautiful sight to see her heart bursting with pride and happiness.  She held close every minute that she was able to spend with them even those in her final days.  Hearing the girls say “Hi Gramma” and the boys “Hi Mamma” and the hugs and kisses that followed were her absolute favourite.  Even when she was no longer physically able to play, she loved to watch the four of them play and run around the house squealing and giggling.  It was the best when the house was filled with joyful noise.

During the last few years Carol and Tom were happy to enjoy traveling, taking vacations to Mexico, The Dominican Republic, The Bahamas, Jamaica and Cuba to name a few.  A good time, tons of laugher and adventures were always assured when traveling with their FUFV friends.  During the summer a lot of time was spent  camping around Manitoba with favourite spots in Hecla, Winnipeg Beach, Lilac Resort and the Rubber Ducky Resort.  For 30 years there were also many great weekends spent at THE LAKE; sitting around the campfire, on the water, even though she couldn’t swim or a simple walk down Chopp Rd.  She also enjoyed the time she was able to relax and curl up with a good book in the camper by herself.

We would like to thank the many doctors and nurses that helped care for Carol during her battle; Dr. Nick and all the staff at the Beausejour Hospital, Dr. Biniam Kadani from Thoracic Surgery and Dr. Anthony Kaufmann and the Gamma Surgery Department at HSC, Dr. Susan Green, Oncologist at HSC and Cancer Care , all the special people on the Radiology department in the Chemo Clinic, Cancer Care MB, Dr. Schellenberg and staff at Selkirk Hospital.  Special thanks to nurse Mary Rose Operana for all the little things that she did – her kindness will not be forgotten.  Lastly, we would like to thank Dr. Donna Puff and nurse Laura Klammer and staff from Palliative Care and the Interlake Eastern RHA.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour with interment to follow in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
