Wendell Garfield Holmes

Born:  August 10, 1935 – Dryden, Ontario

Predeceased by parents, Jerry and Lena Holmes and siblings, sisters, Lena Lips (Seven Sisters), Helen Wade (Winnipeg), Mary Helleker (Pinellas Park, FL), Geraldine Matheson (Dryden, ON), Vera Pero (Kenora, ON), Hazel Hillis (Winnipeg) and Orchid Chartrand (Dryden, ON); brothers, Jerry Holmes (Winnipeg) and John Holmes (Dryden, ON).  Also predeceased by partner Kathleen Merke (Beausejour) and ex-wife, June Holmes.  Survived by numerous nieces and nephews (46), plus 130 great nieces and nephews and some great-great nieces and nephews.

Wendell was gentle, honest, hardworking, and loved to talk to both friends and strangers alike.  He was very fond of the coffee club at Tim Hortons.  He worked at many jobs – lumberjack, lumber mills, construction, fire tower lookout, Department of Highways (ON) and guard at halfway house.  He loved the outdoors, country music and cowboy hats.  Wendell will be missed by family and friends.  There will be no service, but a celebration of life will be planned in the summer to remember Uncle Wendell.  Time and place will be announced in the local paper at a later date.

Soo Sorry to hear of Wendell’s passing. I know he wasn’t doing well and had been suffering for a long while .. I have known Wendell since 1983-84. We still stayed in touch running into each other at the different Businesses in Beausejour and he frequented Guardian Pharmacy, the place that I work and where he came to see his Dr and get his medications. Wendell’s nephew brought Wendell to Guardian Pharmacy before Christmas and I was able to get a 15-20 minute visit in with him knowing it could possibly be the last time I may see him. I walked him out in his wheelchair to his nephews car gave him a hug and said see you next time. Always had a Big Smile and Friendly conversation, Rip Wendell, You will be missed..

Great uncle Wendell growing up I always heard about you and I believe I did see ya few times as a child. This past summer I got the opportunity to Meet up with you at Tim Hortons in Beausejour and you asked which of the greats I was and I told you I was Linda’s daughter. I had a great visit with you there for sure. Another time I got to see you was a month later at home in Beausejour. I helped you out by washing out your glass and pour you some juice. We visited for a bit and you said that I was a lovely girl. Rest in Peace great uncle Wendell, you are missed.
