1944 ~ 2018
Suddenly on November 20, 2018, at the age of 74, Sylvia Joan Thomas passed away at home with her husband by her side.
Sylvia was born June 26, 1944 in a Caboose on the rail line in Winnipeg, MB to parents Esther (Thomas) & Melvin Turcotte of Powerview-Pine Falls, MB. She was raised on The Rock with her siblings Don (Gladys) Yvonne, Albert & Grace (Norman) attending Pine Falls School.
Sylvia had a daughter Grace Carol (Cynthia) March 28, 1960 and married Roy Thomas July 30, 1966. Roy proposed after the fifth night, he later said his feet never touched the ground walking home. Sylvia and Roy made Traverse Bay their home in 1968 and became loving parents to Jason (Kandis) in July, 1975. They had many family adventures including living a year in Inuvik, N.W.T.
Sylvia wore many hats working at The Birchwood, Al Care Centre and Idle Thyme. Sylvia graduated at Empower and was involved with M.M.F and The Children’s home of Winnipeg summer camp. Sylvia was a Granny to Micheal, Shauna, Angela (Jamie), her ‘babies’ Denisha (Tristan) & Justice (Pauline), her great grandchildren Hailey, Jeremy, Jesse, Matthew, Abigail, Levi & Brooklyn, and great great grandson Jaxson, was a proud aunt to numerous nieces & nephews. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, sisters Iris & Grace and daughter Cynthia earlier this year.
Sylvia spent her days travelling, enjoying fiddle music, making bannock, going for walks with her babies and listening to all their stories. Sylvia considered everyone her family (literally) and made friends wherever she was.
The family would like to thank everyone who loved and cared for Sylvia in her last days Marian, Wally, Dawn, Dr. Ijaz and the paramedics for their efforts.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 1 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Alexander Roman Catholic Church, Fort Alexander, MB with a luncheon to follow in Traverse Bay.

Sending my love & condolences to uncle Roy. I’m sorry I can’t be there for the celebration of Sylvia’s life. She was truly a lovely lady who brought smiles to everyone she met. I always looked forward to our talks when we met up. We talked about the simple things that mattered the most in life – family, the homestead, & good health. Wherever Sylvia was we knew that uncle Roy was not too far away. Those two were great together. She will be missed dearly. ((Hugs)) and prayers for all.

I would like to send my confolences to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren
I would also like to send my condolences to her sister Yvonne and brother and family.
I have known Sylvia and family since I was a young child, they lived on the rock and her dad worked at the mill.
Sylvia took me to my first drive in movie where the Beetles were playing in A Hard Days Night. Sylvia always gave me a hug and told me she was glad to see me when we would run into each other in Pine Falls or at the health centre. Rest In Peace Sylvia

I send my condolences to all of my Thomas family. I had a chance meeting with Auntie & Uncle shortly after my initial RA diagnosis in 1997. She and I both happened to be involved in the same outpatient rehab program at HSC. It had been many years since I had seen either of them and my heart skipped a little as I recognized my Aunts voice, I looked up and saw her smile. I used to call her Auntie Applecheeks as a child, not really realizing why she had “applecheeks”. Her beautiful high cheekbones. Once I found Jay on FB, I was somewhat able to see how they were doing, especially since I moved to Arizona. My sisters and I stopped by for a visit a couple of summers ago, but Auntie was under the weather, it was my last opportunity to see her. I love you Auntie, until we meet again.
