1915 ~ 2012
Caring, thoughtful and respectful, Steve passed away peacefully at Park Manor Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Steve was the youngest of ten children of Brokenhead pioneers, Alexander and Malenka Kowalchuk.
He is survived by his children, Rita (Allan) Spence, Connie Greechan, Jack (Christine) Kowalchuk; grandchildren Stephanie, Sharlene (Greg), Cassandra (Joel), Cherise (Shaun), Tiffany (Andrew), Zachary (Erin); step grandchildren Melody (Darryl), Teresa (Kerr) and ten great grandchildren; sisters in-law Leona Kowalchuk, Nell Seifert, Elvira Cann, Shirley Biedler and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Wychreschuk); sisters Mary, Alexandria, Anna, Nellie and Christine; brothers Mike, Dave, John and Paul; sisters in-law Michalina, Violet, Grace, Rose and Anne; brothers in-law John, Mac, Stephen, Thomas, James, Steve, Lloyd, Mike, John, Manuel, Peter, Gordon and step grandson Darcy.
Steve loved the outdoors. With Mary, he was proud of their farm and accomplishments, often made during difficult times. Their home at “The Dencross Corner” was a welcome stop for many.
Steve was a school trustee and founding member of the local Pool Elevator and Manitoba Farmers Union. As a younger man, he spent winter months in bush camps, cutting pulpwood by hand and summer months digging peat moss. He played the violin and was a wonderful dancer. As an older man, he worked as a parks groundskeeper and was recruited by that special fellow “Santa”. He and Mary loved their travels to the Ukraine, China, Cuba and Hawaii.
We thank the wonderful Staff and Volunteers at Park Manor for their care of Steve since August, 2002.
Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 26 at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour with viewing at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, if friends and family desire, donations may be made to Park Manor P.C.H., 301 Redonda Street, Winnipeg, MB R2C 1L7; Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Sandhill, Box 128, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0 or a charity of one’s choice.
