1925 ~ 2013
Peacefully, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother & great-great grandmother Rose Sommerhalder passed away at the Pinawa Hospital on Nov. 20, 2013 at the age of 87.
Mother will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her son Marv (Lorraine), her grandson Chris (Trenna) and their children: Jessica (and her children Jailynn & Bentley), Korey, Devon, Jayda, Corrigan & Kieran; her granddaughter Marsi (Jesse) and their daughter Makenna; and her grandson Brenden. She is also survived by her brother Gordon and was predeceased by her husband Joe in 1993, her brother Rudy and her parents Lily and Fred. She will also join Marie, Dorothy, Den, Lawrence and many family and friends that have left us before her.
Mother was born in Saskatchewan and was raised on the family farm. Her days were very busy helping to raise farm animals and work in the fields as well as helping with cooking, gardening and housekeeping. Raised during the “dirty thirties”, she learned how to be very frugal and innovative and carried these traits with her throughout her lifetime.
In the mid fifties, mother and father made Beausejour their home where they worked side by side in various business ventures such as market gardening in vegetables, corn, strawberries and eventually beekeeping until father’s passing. She remained independent for the last 20 years despite physical limitations she suffered from a stroke in 2000. Her love of nature & the outdoors and her vegetable & flower gardens were second only to the love she had for her family. She was proud of their many accomplishments and always looked forward to their visits. Her sense of humor was only matched by her thorough knowledge and wise analysis of local and global events. She maintained an encyclopaedic knowledge of family history and was always willing to share these stories with us all. She always set timely goals for herself to reach, and upon doing so, strove for the next one. For this, we love and admire her even more. We will miss her words of encouragement and the inspiration she was to us.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will take place at a later date.
The family would like to thank all of Mother’s “home care girls” for the many years of quality care as well the doctors and nursing staff of the Beausejour and PinawaHospitals and the staff at Sobering Funeral Chapel, for their care and compassion throughout.
If friends and family so desire, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Our Mother & Granny –
A tiny lady with a big heart who left a huge hole in ours.
Her wit, wisdom and humour will forever be a part of us all.

Dear Marv, Lori & Family.
Our hearts go out to you all at this time of great sorrow. Know in your hearts that your Mom would have preferred passing in peace as she did. A wonderful lady of wit & joy. Take comfort in her peace.
Love, Uncle L & Auntie A.

Marv, Lorraine and family:
Our deepest sympathies to all of you at this time of sorrow. God only takes the best first and aunty was one of the very best.
When my mom passed in March of this year, she took the reins and provided the support and comfort I needed even with her stuggling with her own issues. She was not only my aunt, but my godmother, and she will be missed very much.
Mega hugs
Angelo and Bonnie

My thoughts go out to you at this difficult time. Your mom was a sweetheart, I first met her when I was a little girl and my mom took me strawberry picking at the farm. Over the years in my healthcare career, I had many conversations with her and opportunities to help care for. I will miss her easy smile and pleasant manner…rest in peace Rose….you deserve to rest……
