1954 ~ 2021

Regina Plett (nee Wagler), age 66, of Selkirk, Manitoba went home to her Lord and Saviour on March 21, 2021, after dealing with multiple health conditions for several years.

Regina was born on August 31, 1954, to Mahlon and Mary Wagler, Amish farmers in Partridge, Kansas. At a young age she was convicted that she was a guilty sinner who needed a Saviour to reconcile her to God and deliver her from the wrath of a Holy God and came to a saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized. Her faith remained an integral part of her life and it shaped her actions, words, and relationships. She lived out her life faithfully serving her God, husband, and family. She was loved dearly by everyone, and she gained a special place in the hearts of many of the children in her church.

Growing up she loved school, playing baseball, and socializing with her friends. She graduated second in her class and her love for learning continued into adulthood. When she was 21 she started working at Stutzman’s Greenhouse where she made many friends. These days spent working here were often referred to as her “glory days”.

Regina left her job at the greenhouse to volunteer in Northern Ontario where she met Ernie Plett. On April 3, 1983 they were married in her home community Kansas. Regina and Ernie settled in Morweena, Manitoba, where they started their family. She spent her years raising her children, homeschooling her children, gardening, and farming the small family hobby farm. Regina did not shy away from hard work and she canned many jars of garden produce every year. She particularly liked growing tomatoes and making many jars of salsa, soup and pasta sauce every year.

Regina enjoyed sewing and specifically enjoyed sewing blankets. She made blankets for each of her children and was working on quilts for her grandchildren. Every scrap of fabric was cut into a block and she thrifted for fabrics whenever she could to make blanket tops for the Morweena Sewing Circle. Even in her last week of life, she was talking about buying fabric and cutting blocks for sewing circle.

Regina liked to cook and thoroughly enjoyed hosting and serving people in her home. Many people have been welcomed into her home over the years and eaten her tasty food. In the more recent years, as her health began to decline, she was unable to prepare the large family dinners and this was hard for her to accept. But, as with all things in her life, she accepted the changes with quiet grace.

Regina loved her family dearly, and nothing made her heart smile quite like her grandchildren. In the last weeks of her life, pictures of her grandchildren brought her great delight.

In recent years her health became a significant challenge due to a stroke, worsening diabetes and end stage renal failure. Ernie faithfully cared for her in the last years and she learned to rely on him in new ways, and particularly since her heart attack on January 3rd as she lost her mobility due to complications. When Regina required urgent surgery on January 23rd, her heart stopped 3 times, necessitating CPR. Regina declined rapidly after this experience and her heart was no longer at home in this world. She longed for heaven and often expressed her desire to “go home”. Regina wrestled with the Lord to accept her circumstances and received grace to accept her journey as from His hand.

Regina was predeceased by her parents and leaves to mourn her husband Ernie Plett; children Anthony (Samantha) Plett, Sherri (Dave) Dyck, Douglas (Jennifer) Plett, Shana (Jerome) Sauvageau, and foster daughter Heidi Plett; grandchildren Ty, Chance, Rose, Eve and Reid Plett.

A private funeral will be held on Friday, March 26, 2021 with burial at Morweena cemetery. Donations in her honour may be made to Morweena EMC designated to the Sewing Circle.

Dear Sherri and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. This is a beautiful tribute to Regina’s life. This quote has helped me in my grief, “When the light returns to its source, it takes nothing of what it has illuminated.” – Rumi

Sherri and the Plett Family,

My sincere condolences for you and your family and take comfort that Regina is now home as she desires. She sounds like an amazing woman. As I squirrel away pieces of fabric I will think of her.
