April 26, 1927 ~ April 9, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nellie Winzinowich on April 9, 2021, aged 93, at St. Norbert Personal Care Home.
She is survived by her daughters Donna (Robert) Weeler and Joanne Winzinowich, as well as her two grandchildren Anthony (Becca) and Heather. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Adolph, and by her parents Tony and Tekla (Teenie) Posaluko.
Mom was born an only child in the tiny farming village of Thalberg, Manitoba. At a young age, she left to work in Winnipeg, but returned to assist our grandparents on the farm. She met our dad (Adolph) at a Stead community event. He was the local schoolteacher who was dressed up as Santa Claus. After they married they moved to Beausejour to live and raise their family.
Mom and Dad were an inseparable couple. Sundays were spent going for leisurely drives or visiting relatives. They enjoyed spending time at their condo at Winnipeg Beach. They frequently traveled the world, visiting places like Hawaii, Mexico, Europe, Cuba, Barbados, Morocco, and the Canary Islands, as well as a number of ocean cruises.
Mom was exceptionally proud of her Ukrainian heritage, always eager to learn more about the culture. Joanne surprised her by taking her on a trip to Ukraine in 1999. She had the opportunity to visit the ancestral villages where her parents were born. She often reminisced about this trip of a lifetime. She was an excellent Ukrainian cook. Tony and Heather always say Granny made the best perogies ever.
Reading, gardening, crocheting, bird watching, and spoiling her cats and grandchildren were just some of her interests. In recent years, she started writing her memoirs. She occupied herself with sukodu and word puzzles until her health rapidly declined. She loved meeting new people and could strike up conversations with complete strangers. She had an amazing memory and was often consulted for information regarding our family history.
Mom was very proud of the accomplishments of her daughters and grandkids. Christmas concerts, band concerts, recitals and graduations were must attend events for her.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home. Their kindness, exceptional care and compassion for our mother and Granny during the past two years have meant the world to us. They are more than caregivers, Mom considered them her friends and family.
A private family funeral service has been held with interment in St. Mary Roman Catholic Parish Cemetery in Beausejour, Manitoba.
Memorial donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to Oseredok (Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre) 184 Alexander Ave., Winnipeg, MB.

She was a wonderful lady.

To Donna and Joanne. My sympathies to you and your family, as I, too, am going through the range of emotions over the passing of our last surviving parent. Your mom and our mom were both truly blessed to have lived into their 90’s, and may this bring you some solace. My mom, Adeline Angus (nee Duda) passed away March 26th. In looking through my mom’s old photos, I found one of your parents and my parents together, taken probably around 1952 — they were all smiling and laughing. Donna, if you privately email me, I will send you the photo. The era of the generation before us has all but come to an end and we now slowly take their place. My sister Wendy particularly enjoyed when your folks came to visit her when they were passing through Kelowna back in the 1990’s. Your mom was truly a beautiful lady – vichnaya pam’yat. Luv, Rita & Wendy.

Our sincere condolences on Nellie’s passing. Grandma Nellie is what we knew her as. Great neighbor always had a Smile & a Wave. Loved the birds & always had feeders hanging in the spruce trees in front of yard. Loved her kitty cats & enjoyed watching the kids play on the street. Every Christmas we remember you by putting out the Snowmen & Santa Christmas ornaments w candle holders that you gave to us. You touched our hearts Grandma Nellie!
