Menno Harder

September 27, 1937 ~ March 16, 2024

On the morning of March 16, Menno passed away peacefully at East Gate Personal Care Home.  He will now join his parents, Henry and Kay; sister Lorna and brothers-in-law Ian, Larry and Earle.

Left to cherish his memory are siblings Edna, Audrey (Dennis), Allen (Shirley), Larry (Pat), Gladys (Johnny), sister-in-law Chris, brother-in-law Albert and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Menno will be missed by his wife, Ruth, of 63 years; sons Gerry (Lorelei), Kelvin (Betty), Bryan (Karen); grandchildren Mike (Leslie), Stacey (Tommy), Alyssa (Ross), Matthew, Danielle, Logan, Miranda and Bryson; great-grandchildren Nic, Ryder, Alisson, Amelia, Jesi and Lily.

Menno retired in 1993 from the Department of Highways after 37 years.  He always enjoyed working with a grader for Rodney Cook at R.M. of Springfield, Chabet Enterprise, R.M. of Brokenhead, Green Oak Gravel and last grader job with cousins Jack and Ernie of JKW Construction.  He then tried his skills at farm work with Patrick and Richard Lachance, where he enjoyed a different challenge.

Menno was very proud of his sons and grandchildren playing many sports.  He tried not to miss a game if possible.  He was a loyal volunteer grooming snowmobile trails for Springfield Pathfinders and Mooswa Club.  He rode many, many miles on these trails and others through Manitoba and parts of the U.S.  In summer he could be seen on his motorcycle also traveling many miles.  When time allowed, he helped flood the ice at C.P.T. Centre for the upcoming snowmobile races.

In June 2020, he suffered a stroke which eliminated most of his activities.  He could then be seen riding here and there on his scooter.  In spring 2022, after a month in hospital, he went to Whitemouth Personal Care Home which became his new home for 8 months.  In December 2022 he returned to Beausejour and resided at East Gate Personal Care Home.  Our family extends a very “Special Thank You” to all the staff and doctors at both of these locations for their kindness and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Beausejour Hospital T.V. Fund, Box 1614, Beausejour, MB, R0E 0C0.

Menno’s Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, 300 Veterans Lane, Beausejour, MB.

Ruth & family. We are very sorry for you loss. We both enjoyed the time we spent with both you and Menno at work and after hours. So many great memories of the MIT shop in Bird’s Hill and our employee get-together’s in Bird’s Hill Park. The road to the Pearly Gates will be better for all of us to travel on, now that Menno is there to maintain it. Goodbye old friend.

Menno you were a very special brother in law. Always giving me a rough time about my intense house cleaning. Promise I will continue to make you proud on that. I will bake you a special dozen of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies to munch on in heaven. Love you & RIP.

Ruth and family, my sincerest condolences on Menno passing. Menno and I enjoyed riding together even when I beat him home and got my ass reamed out by him saying g kid, as he always called me, if we’re riding together were riding together, you follow me. Menno always uplifted me knowing my potential mechanical skills, as once him and a few friends were riding to Rousseau and one of his buddies got into an accident Ruth went and picked up the broken down sled and was informed by Menno to get ahold of that Markus kid and ask him to put a fire in my shop and put the sled back together for his buddy which I gladly did. You taught me many things in life one being to respect your elders and we did have 1 or 2 tiffs in our friendship but it always blew over and had great fun always. Menno when you’re up in heaven find that deer that you and I shot twice up by Libau and searched the entire day for not finding it and driving back to Beausejour only to sit at your house discussing it with Ruth and after finishing our beer saying to me come on kid let’s go back and find it, it’s gotta be there. Unfortunately it wasn’t and now my dear friend you’re the only one now who knows where it did go. Thanks for always teaching me things and being there for me. Now you’re with Norm, Kenny and Earl enjoying some bevy’s and like in life I’m sure my dad Norm has you starting a fire in the garage and other jobs. Love you my friend. Till we meet again .

I had the honor of meeting the Harder’s when my folks moved our family from Winnipeg to the Anola area in 1972. I’ve bumped into both Ruth and Menno in many places, under many different circumstances over those 50+ years, and I can say with confidence, that I’ve never seen either of them without a giant smile on their faces or something kind to say.
Menno set the bar very high as a father, a friend, and someone I’d to be like.
He’s truly a role model for everyone he left behind
I’m lucky to have known him.
    Warmest Condolences,
    Graham
