April 6, 1957 ~ June 28, 2019

Mel passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 62.  Mel is predeceased by his father Anton, mother Nellie, and brother Richard.  He is survived by his loving wife Linda Gmiterek of 38 years; daughters, Melissa (Jeremy) and Ashley (Brent); and grandchildren, Raina, Brooks, Garrett, Cruz, and Karli.

Mouse was born and raised in Beausejour where he was known for his outstanding carpentry skills, hockey playing abilities, and his love for his family.  He met Linda in 1979 and married her the following year where they began their family.  Mouse loved his girls more than anything and could not have been more proud.  He found more room in his heart to love his five grandchildren with the same love he had for his three girls.

Mouse never missed a Jets or Bombers game.  He loved watching sports but loved playing games just the same.  He never went easy on his girls; he loved to win against them.  Playing lawn darts, card games, ping pong and board games were among his favourite games to beat us at.  When he wasn’t busy playing games, you could find him adoringly playing with his cats.

Mouse had the most amazing sense of humour.  You could always find him giggling about situations even when it may not have been the right time.  He loved to laugh, and we loved to hear his laugh.  Daddy, your laugh and smile will be in our hearts forever and always.

We are beyond appreciative to the home care and palliative care staff, as well as Dr. Van Rensburg and staff, who were so caring and compassionate throughout Mel’s last days.

A service for Mouse will be held at Sobering Funeral Chapel on Monday, July 8 at 1:00 p.m.

Condolence from Barbara Grabowski on July 2nd, 2019 10:50 pm

My name is Barbara Grabowski and I live in Edmonton and a friend of mine called me tonight about Mouse’s passing. I have been away from Beausejour for quite awhile now but I first met Mouse at a school dance and he won me over. He was funny and made me feel good. Even the years I was away he was always in my thoughts. I use to come out for visits on the weekend and the guys including Mouse would meet me for drinks and take care of me Mouse and some of the boys and some of us girls would spend weekend camping .. that was until he found his love Linda and his girls. He was so in love .
To Linda and her family , my sincere thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time.
He must be having a good talk with his brother Richard .

Dear Linda and family
Our deepest condolences to all of you. May all your cherished memories bring you moments of comfort and peace in the days ahead.
Grief never ends
but it changes
It’s a passage
Not a place to stay
Grief is not a sign
of weakness, nor
a lack of faith…
It is the price of love
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love Harlon and Barb

Condolence from Barbara Grabowski on July 5th, 2019 1:40 pm

My name is Barb and a piece of my heart is broken when I heard the news of Mouse’s passing. I was sitting here thinking of the good times we use to have when I lived there and when I came back for visits.
Mouse was the guy who could you make you laugh, cry but was always there.
I am just sorry that I didn’t get to visit while he was sick. To his wife and kids, my thoughts are with you and I hope this doesn’t sound tacky but I am and will be raising a glass of something to his honour at the time of his funeral.
Rest in piece Mouse. I will never forget you.

To Mel’s family. So very sorry to hear of Mel’s passing. Fifty two years ago Mel, better known as Mouse, walked into a Grade 5 classroom at the old Beausejour Elementary School all smiles and full of laughter. This was my very first teaching assigment and from that moment that Mel and his buddies entered the classroom I knew that it was going to be an interesting year. Mouse’s personality and friendliness was something that I will always cherish. Rest in peace and God bless your family.
