Mary Eleanor Hill

In Memorial

December 21, 1947 – December 2, 2020

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mary Eleanor Hill, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.  Mary was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gould of Winnipeg, her in-laws Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hill of Seven Sisters Falls, as well as her two stepbrothers and one stepsister.

Mary, Mom as I will refer to her from now on, is survived by her loving husband Don, and her three boys with their families; Erin, his wife Odilia, and their daughters Katia and Tatyanna; Kristjan, his wife Elise, and their children Alison, Lucas, Emilie and Marc; Rob, his wife Quinn, and their children Brody, Ryder, and Olivia; their “bonus” children Wendy and Christine Martin (son Gavin) who mom and dad welcomed into our home, hearts, and family.  Last, but not least, a dog, Bandit, who she adored and who diligently came to visit her while she spent her last few years in the personal care home.

Mom grew up in Winnipeg, meeting dad at the summer cottage, and from dad’s account, pursued him till he gave in.  They were married May 19, 1967, and set up a home in St. James, where mom worked at John Taylor Collegiate in the office, and dad travelled up north working heavy construction.

Their first son arrived in September 1971, and soon after they made the move out to Seven Sisters, where they built their first home, one of three they would share their lives in.  Kris followed shortly after in December 1972, and Rob straggled along in July 1976.

Mom worked hard to raise the family, growing gardens, meticulously planting flower beds, canning and baking, something she is famous for.  She taught Sunday School, worked to set up the Nursery School, and volunteered with the Church.  Once us boys were old enough to fend for ourselves, she went back to work at Whitemouth School, where she was a Special Needs Educational Assistant, making many lifelong friendships with staff, parents, and students.  She loved to camp, and she and dad spent over 20 years hosting in Icelandic State Park in Cavalier, North Dakota, where they touched the lives of so many, volunteering with all the park programs to help make memories for so many, as they had with us as children.

Mom fought a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, but finally she couldn’t battle anymore.  It was tiring and taxing on her.  She is at peace now, resting.  She worked so hard for everyone for so many years, she deserves the rest.

The family would like to thank the exceptional nurses, health care aides, dietary staff, janitorial staff – ALL employees of the Whitemouth Personal Care Home who have cared for mom over the years, and showed such compassion to not only mom but to all of us as well.  It is not something to be forgotten or taken for granted, in these especially trying times.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Alzheimer’s Society or the Whitemouth Personal Care Home.

A family memorial will take place at a later date.

The Sagness family is so sorry for your loss. My parents Gail and Dan shared so many great years and memories with your Mom and Dad. I have the most amazing memories spending summers with your family. All the life long lessons I learnt about gardening and cooking from your mom. Many years at the cabin, playing games, cards, fishing, boating, hiking, picking blueberries, eating great food and having camp fires. She was an amazing woman a fantastic human being. We will always remember her with the fondest memories. Our thoughts are with all of you.

My thoughts and love go out to Don, Kris, Erin, and Rob. Mary was such a warm and loving person and such a big part of my childhood. She was always ready with a hug and a smile and an offer to stay for dinner. Some of my earliest memories are of her immaculately kept house and the wonderful vegetable garden in the backyard. Later, as a teen working for Don Hill Construction, I remember Mary as the steady hand that saw us off early every morning with amazing packed lunches. I wish I could be there to pay my respects and grieve with you. When the pandemic is over, I certainly will.
    Love, David Zechel and family

So very sorry for your loss Don, Erin, Kris, Rob and families. Growing up as neighbours brought so many memories. Your mom always had an open door, a smile or laugh, great food and treats. I also remember her as part of Sunday school and of course at school in Whitemouth as well. Such a loving, warm women who was a motherly figure to many. She will be missed. Will keep you all in my thoughts during this difficult time.

To Don, Erin, Kris, Rob and families – please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of Mary. I have the fondest memories of all the things we did together like organizing Country Sunshine Nursery School, being on church council at St. Paul, preparing funeral lunches, those wonderful Sausage and Sauerkraut fundraising dinners and car pooling for many years to Whitemouth School. I was envious of her cooking and baking skills and I share your grief; she was a wonderful friend.
