It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marshall Grant Bailey of Pinawa, MB at the age of 81, at Health Sciences in Winnipeg on February 22nd, 2017.

Grant is survived by his beloved wife Bonnie and their three children: Bryan and wife Jennifer of Kingston, ON., daughter Kerri Ann and husband Jim Swanson, and Glenn and wife Susanne of Winnipeg, MB.

He is also survived by one brother, Gary and wife Sigrid of Vancouver, BC.

He leaves nine grandchildren; Laura Bailey Pridmore, Karyn Bailey, Steven Bailey, Robert Swanson, Kevin Swanson, Matthew Swanson, Kaelyn Bailey, Alyssa Bailey, and Syrah Bailey.

He is also fondly remembered by brother’s-in-law and wives; Allen and Susan Dahl of Portage la Prairie, Grant and Joanne Dahl of Listowel, ON, and Mervin Dahl of Calgary and many nieces and nephews.

Grant was born in Portage la Prairie, and predeceased by his parents Merle Bailey and James Bailey.

Graduating from Ryerson Technology in Toronto in 1961, Grant worked two years at Atomic Energy of Canada in Deep River, Ontario as a Chemical Technologist and then transferred to the Research site at Pinawa in 1963.  Grant and Bonnie were pioneers in the newly built town of Pinawa.  They lived and raised their family in this beautiful town for 54 years.  In earlier days, he was an excellent, competitive curler.  He enjoyed ancestry research, dancing, gardening, golfing, making wine and winter vacations in Palm Desert.

His family and friends were very important to him.  He will be missed and remembered for many fun times and his unique sense of humour.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the F.W. Gilbert School in Pinawa.

Flowers gratefully declined.  If desired, donations in Grant’s memory may be made to Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, Winnipeg, MB R3B 1M3.

    To Bonnie and family:
We are so sorry to hear the sad news. I was very lucky to have Grant as a co-worker when I first arrived in Canada. Without his knowledge, guidance, and sense of humour, my early working life at AECL would have been very different. He was a friend as well as a co-worker and a person that anyone would have been proud to be associated with.

    Bonnie & Family:
We were so very sorry to hear of Grant’s passing! So hard to believe you are long-time “pioneers” of Pinawa! Although our paths did not cross too often (at the odd family reunion), we mostly kept in touch at Christmas time, which was always enjoyable! Stay strong, Bonnie….we know you are close with your family!
Hugs & Condolences to all of you………Audrey & Ron Tarr (cousins)

I was saddened to hear of Grant’s passing, my heartfelt condolences to Bonnie and family. We always think nice people will live for ever! When I first started work in 1969 at Atomic Energy of Canada’s Whiteshell Lab (or WNRE as it was then) it was Grant who helped me in so many ways. He knew how to get things done and how to get people to do them for you. Such a great help to a rookie. Sometime in 1970 we became co-workers for a short period until he was moved into a higher priority project. Grant was an exceptionally talented technologist, as a result, our limited time together was very productive and several scientific papers were published on our work. It was during this period that I learnt one of the most important lessons of my career. Grant suggested we would work much more productively as a team, if I focussed on the office side of things and left the lab work to him. Well, to be truthful, he put it a little more bluntly than that! It was a turning point in my career, to recognize the strengths in others, to let and nurture them to do what they were best at and to keep out of their way! A lesson I will be ever thankful for. I will miss his sense of humour and his playful leg pulling. A Gentleman in so many ways and always fun to meet and exchange a few words, I realise now how much I will miss seeing him.

Dear Bonnie,Bryan,Kerri and Glenn and your families: So sorry to hear of Grant’s passing. He was a such a kind, vibrant personality as I remember. If I remember correctly he liked to play Jada on the piano and I remember him doing so with friends singing along when my parents had a party and I “was supposed to be” sleeping! Much love, comfort and happy treasured memories to all. Love Judy(Booth)Janzen
