Lenore Charney

1927 ~ 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom and Grandma Lenore (Lolly) Charney (nee Reimer) at the Beausejour Hospital on Wednesday May 11, 2016 at the age of 88. Mom was born in Winnipeg on August 30, 1927.

She was predeceased by her parents Klass S. Reimer and Sarah K. Reimer (Dueck), her husband Reginald Charney, son-in-law Rod Keilback, brothers Levi, Ed, Gordon, Earnest, Wilfred and Stan, and sisters Elma Haughey , Elisabeth and Mary Norma (Mitz) Toews.

Mom will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter Sharron Keilback of Beausejour, son Lorne (Connie) Charney of Whitemouth and daughter Carol (Larry) Marrese of Winnipeg along with her grandchildren Edward Keilback, Kristin (Skyler) Balleny, and Brett Keilback all of Beausejour.

She is also survived by five brothers and sisters, Evelyn (John) Penner, Twin Brother Len, brothers Bill (June), and Ken (Peggy) and sister Joan (Larry) Thiessen along with brother in law Len Toews, sister in laws Joan Reimer, Adele Kost and Evangeline Charney, and many nieces and nephews.

Mom and Dad were married in 1955 and lived in Winnipeg where they had 3 children. Mom sewed most of our clothes by hand when we were young and she worked tirelessly to care for her family. In 1972 the family moved from Winnipeg to Whitemouth to the Charney homestead where Mom and Dad hoped to provide a safer environment to raise their family. Mom was an avid gardener and her harvest led to a bounty of jams, jellies, canned vegetables and pickles. Mom spent many hours picking plums which she canned and had the scars on her arms to show for it.  After Dad suffered a heart attack in 1975, Mom returned to the workforce at the age of 46.  She took her training and became certified as a nurse’s aide where she worked at the Whitemouth Hospital until her retirement. Out of necessity in order to get to and from work, Mom also got her Driver’s License at that time.

Mom became a widow at a young age.  After Dad’s passing, she moved off the family farm and into Whitemouth.  She was always busy doing something including volunteering at the personal care home, delivering Meals on Wheels, helping the Whitemouth Hospital Guild and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She also enjoyed many social activities like bingo and casino bus trips with her friends. She was always willing to try new adventures especially if it meant spending time with family and friends. Mom always enjoyed holiday dinners and family get-togethers. She was so busy at times, it was hard to get ahold of her.  She loved to watch curling and sports and would come to watch baseball and curling games especially when her kids were playing.  We had a family tradition of having a Pancake Breakfast at Mom and Dad’s house on Sports Day and bonspiel weekends.

Mom made many sacrifices throughout her life for her family and will be dearly missed but we have many wonderful memories.

Since Mom volunteered for many charities, it seems fitting that in lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Partyka and the staff at Beausejour and Pinawa Hospitals for their care and compassion.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Whitemouth with viewing one hour prior to the service.

Lenore and I were good friends when she lived in whitemouth. We had many an outing together and she brightened them all with her smile and good humor. I missed her when she moved and often thought of her with affection. My deep condolences to all her family. Carol Ans
