Mr. Hattie was my high school teacher and I remember him as a kind and laid back man, with a good sense of humour! Seeing this picture from the yearbook again, brings back good memories of him. Surely he will have left a large void…. he influenced a lot of us, and I know there will be many of your own wonderful memories that remain! Although saddened by his passing, I am thankful that it was peaceful, with lots of love around him…. and it’s good to hear of the hope for the future that you are embracing. A life well lived, Mr. Hattie!

Loved Mr Hattie! Such a sweet intelligent man. I was playing hide and seek with some friends and he let my friend and I hide in his classroom while he was teaching a class! Thank you from all of us that had the privilege of to say he was my teacher! Rest In Peace

We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family. Mr. Hattie was a great influence in my career choice, he was my homeroom teacher in grade 12 in Whitemouth, he had a quiet and effective style that made him a memorable teacher.

I have such fondness for your family, Mrs. Hattie. I learned so much from you and Mr. Hattie, both as teachers and as people. He was a man of principle, kindness, and wit. You two influenced my decision to become a teacher. My deepest condolences to you and Charlotte. You’re in my thoughts.

I never knew Mr. Hattie by his first name and I don’t recollect ever seeing him as clean cut as this picture. I will always have fond memories of him with his Einstein hair, his patched blazer elbows, his infinite patience with all us hoolagans, his passion for science, and for peaking my curiosity about what really went on in the storage room between his class room and yours Judy.
May all the wonderful memories of your lives together bring you peace. My condolences to you and Charlotte.

Reading all these messages makes it perfectly clear what a great teacher Mr Hattie was. I must say I didn’t enjoy physics and it was one of the harder classes for me, but Mr Hattie was very patient and would always explain it until I got it. I also remember him as kind. And very tolerant! Even when some of the students (the boys of course) were being mischievous. I am happy to know he had a long and fulfilling life! My condolences to you Mrs Hattie (you were also one of my favorite teachers).

Condolences to the family. Glad he lived a long and meaningful life. He deserved it. Always had a great sense of humor. I remember he backed into a police car. They both backed up at the same time. I had him for 11 + 12 science. Him and Don had to be the greatest teachers 50 years ago this year!

I am thinking of you with heartfelt condolences in the passing of your husband and father. I am so sorry for your loss. I want to add a few words to the many messages here with the hope that the sharing of the ways in which Mr Hattie left an indelible mark on our lives will bring you some comfort in the days ahead.
Mr. Hattie made learning fun and he seemed undaunted by our shenanigans! Whether in class or in the hallway I always knew there would be a meaningful conversation; even the funny one’s seem to hold a lesson. I have been reflecting on how much Mr. Hattie and Mrs Hattie influenced my life choices. You both encouraged us small town kids to believe in ourselves. Mrs Hattie I still use the Field Guide to the Birds that you gave me in 1976 with your written message “May your love of the life around you bring you peace and happiness in the future” Your message has been a mantra in my life. It is wonderful to read of Mr. Hattie’s menagerie of animals; his love for all life around him clearly brought him peace and happiness . Mr Hattie’s acts of loving kindness made this world a better place for all sentient beings. Jack was 11 years older than me, but a great sport. They made those logs out of paper and put chemicals on them for wild colored flames, had never seen that before and was very impressed. At New Years, they came and Jack and his dad were quite happy reading my comics. When in high school, Jack tutored my friend Gail and I in math, he was always patient with us and seemed quite amused by us too. So glad to hear his story, he always had that little grin with his sense of humour and am so glad he had the life he deserved. Am sure his family will miss him.
