1928 ~ 2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joe (Joost) Samsom on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the age of 84 years.
Dad was born in Vinkeveen, Holland on November 21, 1928. The oldest of ten children born to Nickolas and Aagje Samsom, he immigrated to Canada in 1946 at age 18. Dad had attended agricultural school in Holland prior to coming to Canada. He worked on a farm in the Little Britain area for some time and saved enough to invest in land in the Anola area. There he met and later married Dorothy Juanita Buss on July 3, 1954. Together, Mom and Dad raised their family of six children and through much hard work built the home placed into a successful dairy farm. It was a very busy time for hardworking people in an era when everyone knew their neighbours and all lent each other a helping hand when needed. Dad assisted many a neighbour with his expertise with livestock. In turn many friends, neighbours and extended family were always there to lend a hand when needed on the farm.
Dad loved to square dance and play cards with his many friends and neighbours. He enjoyed singing in the church choir, curling and gardening. He would visit his family back home in Holland yearly when possible and often had visitors from Holland. He enjoyed people and kept very busy after retirement with his many interests. Sundays were always the day when the whole family would congregate at Dad’s. He enjoyed having a full house and everyone was always welcome.
Dad was predeceased by his son Robert, his wife Nita, his sister Annie and his brother in-law Co.
Dad is survived by his brothers and sisters: Wim (Pie), Rika, Jan (Mary), Aagje (Gert), Willy (Piet), Janny (Dirk), Nico (Jenny), Arie (Susan) and brother in-law Brem as well as numerous nieces and nephews and family in Holland; his children Nick (Helga), Thelma (Joe), William (Debbie), Bev (Greg), and Diane (Dwayne); grandchildren Nicole (Richard), Michael, Samantha (Adam), Judy (Harley), Rene (Shannon), Spencer, Ben, Wally, Jordan, Joshua and Hanna; great grandchildren Emily, Alex, Amber, Brendan and Cadence; brother in-law Uncle Warren (Ilona) and family, sister in-law Auntie Isabel and family, and his very special friend and companion Marlene De Paulo and her grandson Charlie.
We wish to express our heartfelt thank and gratitude for the compassionate care he received. Special thanks to Dr. Schroeder and the staff of RR6 at Health Sciences Centre and the staff of Beausejour Hospital.

It is with the heaviest of hearts I read of the passing of your dad. I have so many good memories; his laughter, his mischief, and a few som’ n guns thrown in. I will forever be grateful for the love and kindness he has always shown me. Wishing you peace in the days to come as you say good bye.

So sorry for your loss. I wasn’t able to make it to Joe’s funeral but my prayers are with you. Joe was a good guy and we enjoyed square dancing with him. He will be greatly missed.

Dear family of Joost,
Joost was my dear nephew. We spent lots of time when we were young. Joost always visited me when he came to Holland. For the first time in 50 years he forgot my birthday; he always called me on my birtday. So I called him up and I noticed he was a little confused. I thought about him lots of time and I will always miss his phonecalls on the 21th of October (my birtdhday). I am very glad with the card Susan gave to me. My son googled on Beausejour & Samsom and so we found this condolence-site. I’m very happy to be able to send you all this message. I wish you all the best and I will keep Joost in my memory for the years that I have left. Joost was one month younger than me.
With love,
Riek Winkel-Samsom
