July 25, 1931 ~ January 11, 2022
Peacefully on January 11, 2022, at East Gate Lodge in Beausejour, Joan Modjeski passed away with her family at her side, she was 90 years old.
She was predeceased by her husband John in 1998, and her grandson Jason Englot in 2018. In addition, Joan was predeceased by her siblings: Adeline, Steffie, Katie, John, Joey, and Richard.
She leaves to morn her passing, her children: Audrey (Stan), Robert, Cindy, and Barb. She is survived by her grandchildren: Jeff, Jennifer (Ryan), Kristy (Adam), Martina, and Chad. As well she is survived by her siblings Clara Matchizen, Rose Gmitroski, and Pat (Richard) Rattai.
Joan was born and raised on the Schultz family farm in Cromwell, Manitoba, the fourth of ten brothers and sisters. A very close-knit family, many good times were held at the farm with many musical instruments and singing sessions. After their marriage in 1951, Mom & Dad moved onto a farm very near where she was raised. Mom worked hard on the farm and always enjoyed the harvest with not just caring for her children and cooking, but also hauling grain, maintaining the yard and gathering the garden harvest. A large garden was planted every year resulting in much canning and freezing. Her freezer always had some frozen squares, cinnamon buns, and other goodies, ready for anyone who happened to stop by. No one ever left the house without a delicious lunch, no matter what the hour. Mom took great pride of the homestead – planting flowers and always ensuring the grass was neatly trimmed. Mom and Dad played endless games of cards, not just at the Brokenhead Community Centre where they were active members, but at home or the homes of others. Later when she moved to Beausejour, she enjoyed attending the Beau-Head Senior Centre.
As per Joan’s request, cremation has taken place and a funeral liturgy will take place at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church at 11:00 on Saturday, May 7, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to East-Gate Lodge Personal Care Home.
Many thanks to the staff at East gate lodge Rose Unit and Dr. Van Rensberg, for all the care and compassion they showed towards our mother.

I am truly sorry for the loss of your Mom. I enjoyed her visits at the store. We would talk & laugh & she told me how she & your Dad used to get together with Len’s Mom & Dad for a good game of cards. She is now at peace with your Dad and I like to think that perhaps those 4 are re-united playing cards again in heaven. Take care.
