Jackie (Jack) Wong

December 3, 1941 – November 3, 2023

It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, father-in-law, brother, uncle and friend, Jackie (Jack) Wong.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his Loving wife and best friend of 53 years Rosemarie (Marek), his sons Scott (Monique), Darren (Lucy), Keith and his Grandchildren Dylan and Morgan, his honorary grandchildren John and Jeremy, His siblings Pearl (Lloyd) Wong, Bing Wong, Anna Mae (Bob) Hunter, Henry Wong, Faye (Ken) Husband, Sylvanna (Warren) Palmer and numerous nephews and nieces.

Jack was predeceased by his Parents Jack & Anne Wong, Sisters Mary McCoy, Lillian Lai & Lynn Smith.

Jack met his wife Rose in 1967 and they eventually married in 1970 following afterwards with 3 sons.

Jack led a rewarding life, filled with many passions.

He started playing the bass and started “The Shondels” in Winnipeg in the 1960s, playing at local community clubs and for school dances. The music boom hit the city and “The Shondels” were off and running.  They toured and traveled all through Canada leaving their stamp everywhere they played. As the 60’s faded he continued to play throughout the city at local bars and was a house band at the Town and Country. Music has always been apart of his life and it was passed through his sons with the music he grew up listening to. He shared the stage with many local talents throughout his music career. Over the years he continued to play music eventually with his son Keith by his side and entertained for close to 5 decades.

Once Jack became a Dad, he made sure he was heavily involved in Scott and Darren’s hockey lives.  He never missed a practice or game and it didn’t matter if it was at 6 am or 9 pm.

He was the president of East Elwood C.C. and helped them receive funding to help build an outdoor rink in the 80’s.  After that he became the President of River East Minor Hockey from 1989 – 1994.  He followed that with being in charge of the “Suspension board” for Winnipeg Minor hockey in the 1990’s.  Lastly he was President of the MMJHL.  Everyone to this day comments on how fair of a man he was and very well liked.

As the boys attended the St Gerard School, he was also chairman of the St Gerard School Board.

Jack worked many jobs over the years including his 35 years with Rug Doctor Canada, with his middle son by his side. He retired as a Western Divisional Manager in 2017, passing the baton on to his son Darren.

The Family would like to extend a Huge thank you to everyone for their support, prayers and cares over the last couple of months.

There will a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at Bronx Community Centre, 720 Henderson Highway, Winnipeg.

There will be no “GO FUND ME” account opened

The Heavens needed a base player… Rock on our “Star”.

Our thought and prayers go out to the family. Jack was a great guy. I enjoyed and cherish every moment I played with his band the shondels and prior to that the black and white affair. Jack was a kind and caring person and a hell of a guitar player. He will be missed. Sending hugs and condolences. Please let us know when the celebration of life will be.

My very sincere condolences to Rose and the family, especially Darren with whom I worked. I was fortunate to know Jack and to have worked with him for more than twenty years. In that time we may have butted heads but shared much laughter as well. He had a wonderful sense of humour that diffused many tense situations in his work with our area reps in the field. He was unfailingly kind and affable. He will be missed by the music community in Winnipeg as well as all who knew him.

Very sad to hear the news about Jack. I grew up across the street from Jack on Johnson Ave and knew the Wong family well. I was fortunate enough to again meet up with Jack through our sons hockey teams and renewed the relationship. Jack was a terrific guy and will be missed. My best wishes to his entire family.

It was with great sadness that I heard the news of Jack’s passing from my son, Scott Young.
Back in the days of our youth, I became good friends with Jack & the Shondels, first when I was working at Lillian Lewis Records, or afterwards at London Records.
Many evenings were spent with Jack, Mike, Ken, & Gary at the Gold Coach lounge, or wherever else they were performing.
As happens in life, we kind of drifted apart when we both got married and went into different vocations. However, we did manage to get to visit each other when there was a music reunion of the various bands. There was one in Transcona, the Shakin’ All Over concert in 1987, & The Rock & Roll Revival in 2009.
Deepest condolences to all members of the family and I hope to see you on April 27th, 2024.
    Gerry Young

    Rose & Family,
My Goodness what a fascinating life Jack experienced. I only met him a few times at St. Gerard school. To be involved in the Winnipeg music scene in the 60’s. Winnipeg had such talent span out in that period. I would have loved to experience his talent as I love music. I’m sure he played with some of our friends in that era. All of you must be so proud to have had him in your life as a father and husband. For darned sure he is busy up there making music. You can’t keep a talented musician from doing his gig.
Rose I send Hugs to you and heartfelt condolences.
