September 16, 1921 – May 18, 2018
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved grandmother and great-grandmother Helen Struss on May 18, 2018 at the age of 96 at East Gate Lodge.
Helen is survived by her grandson Danny (Sarah) and granddaughter Holly (Victor); her wonderful great-grandchildren Justyn (friend Isabelle), Cameron, Emily, Evan, and Maria Jade. Her sister Dallas, and brothers Tony (Elsie) and Casey, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Joe, her son Bob and daughter-in-law Carol, her mother (Julia), father (Anthony), brothers Frank (Betty), Joe (Rose), Gene, Larry (Sally) and Edward, and sister Carol (Paul).
Grandma was a wonderful gardener. She would spend hours in her garden, if you couldn’t find grandma you knew she was in her garden. With those fresh vegetables grandma made the best homemade soup, borscht and pickled beets, also her amazing green beans. Grandma also enjoyed making perogies. She would always have a care package ready with her yummy food when you came to visit. Helen and her husband Joe lived in Ladywood, MB where they raised their son Robert. They moved to Beausejour in the early 1990’s. Grandma enjoyed knitting. She would always have a pair of mitts or a new toque made for you when you came to visit.
Viewing will be held on Friday May 25 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel. Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday May 26 at St Mary Roman Catholic Church, 516 Atlantic Ave., Beausejour, MB.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Mary Roman Catholic Church.

My condolences to the entire family. Aunty Helen was a big part of my life for many years. As a child, we would spend almost every Sunday visiting them at the farm. As I grew older, I often would invite her to visit with my grandmother (Carrie Stefaniuk) and myself. We’d go for a drive to see the old house on the farm, and visit the cemeteries. These past years, visiting had become less because I no longer live in Manitoba. But every time I was out, I would stop by to visit her while also visiting my dad at East Gate Lodge. In our dining room is a photo montage and Aunt Helen and Uncle Joe are there keeping an eye on us.
Aunt Helen was a hard working woman. She maintained two gardens (the winter garden and the summer garden), and on the farm had chickens, pigs, cows, and horses that needed care. There was no better chicken noodle soup than what she made at Christmas time. Fresh, free range chicken, before anyone ever heard of those terms for real food. She was a wonderful cook. Every time we would drop in, out would come a veritable feast of simple, delicious homemade food. Her pickles were the best.
Aunt Helen, I know you are now in Heaven. Your earthy work is done. Rest in peace. I love you.

Dear Dan, Sarah, Holly, Victor and family,
I had the privilege of meeting your Grandma only a couple of times. I heard and felt so much love in your stories and I am forever grateful that I met her.
Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer.
Love and hugs also from Kevin and James,
