Hans “Hänschen” Dieter Bauer

September 16, 1954 ~ October 5, 2017

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Hans “Hänschen” Dieter Bauer on October 5, 2017, with his wife and children in Winnipeg at his side.

Hans is remembered with much love, laughter, and tears by his wife Souada; mother Inge; sister Ingrid Andrews (Bruce); children: Olivia, Peter (Faye), Cathy, Jonathan, Melody, Stanton, Sumi, Fred, and Patrick; and grandsons: Corwin, Wesley, Patrick, Edward, and Kirin. Hans was predeceased by his father Hanns August Bauer.

Hans was born in Germany and grew up in Winnipeg and Pointe du Bois. As a young man, he traveled to Europe and North Africa, where he met his wife Souada, the love of his life for his remaining 37 years. Pops was a well-read, widely-traveled (20 countries!), multilingual (English, German, French, Bahasa Indonesia, Arabic, amongst others), multitalented, creative man who loved us and loved music, reading and nature, especially the Whiteshell. He wrote poetry and fiction, played the guitar and drums, and dabbled in woodworking and drawing. He was an avid adventurer and explorer, both of the great outdoors and the wonderful world of books. He was a tea connoisseur and enjoyed his mother’s German cooking, mom’s couscous, and fried rice and spaghetti.

We remember Pops as a deep, thoughtful, gentle man who was patient and kind, friendly to all he met. He could easily strike up a conversation with people of all ages and walks of life and speak knowledgeably on topics ranging from nature to geology, history, politics, and the stars. Pops was curious about the world around him and was always learning. This made him an excellent teacher, remembered fondly to this day by his students of over 20 years ago. Dad was playful and encouraged us to develop our imagination and have a sense of wonder about the world around us. Pops flowed like water, adjusting his life to find a way through or around obstacles, while remaining true to himself and his values and goals. He was disinterested in the rat race of success or wealth and took pleasure in the simple things of life. Dad never gave his children ultimatums or insisted we do things his way. He loved us unconditionally and influenced our lives by giving us a safe space from which to grow and discover our own paths. “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.”

A family celebration of Hans’s life was held on October 13, 2017, at Sobering Funeral Chapel, Beausejour, followed by a private interment.

Dear Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that our Creator is also aware of your loss and pain. Psalm 34:18 “Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted; He saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Have heard about it today. I knew him as a young man traveling through Europe. He was my paternal cousin. On October 2, his cousin Thomas died in Germany. And 3 days later then He. As Adventists, we will pray for the family.
