Gaylord Newman

1940 – 2023

After a brief illness, our husband, dad, papa and brother went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Friday, October 6, 2023.

Gaylord will be lovingly remembered by his wife Elizabeth, sons Terry (Jennifer), Chris (Jennifer), Travis and Garth (Jennifer), his grandchildren, family and friends.

Gaylord was born June 26, 1940 at St Ouens. His family owned the country store, he attended the one room school and played in the river, an idyllic childhood.  He developed a love for nature and hunting. A farm accident at age 5 left him totally deaf in one ear and a car accident at age 21 left him limping but he always persevered with no complaining.

At the insistence of his friend Jack Zielke , who packed Gaylord’s suitcase and marshalled him into the car, he got a job with Kimberley Clark paper mill in Terrace Bay. He spent several good years there and made many trips back to visit his friend Harold Prill.  After that he worked for Atomic Energy Canada Ltd. for 33 years as a reactor operator. He accepted Jesus as his Savior and Lord and used his love of music to serve him at every opportunity. Together with Gordon Klepatz he founded the Manitoba Gospel Music Jamboree.

In 1980 he married Elizabeth Brown, the love of his life and together they raised four sons Terry, Chris, Travis and Garth. Later 3 daughters–in-law were added. Each of them named Jen!  In 2019 when he was informed he would be a grandpa he was over the moon.  He enjoyed farming, hunting, travelling and making firewood.  One of his favorite sayings was, ”Happiness is Dad with a big woodpile!”

In 2001, he along with his son Garth canoed the Brokenhead River all the way  to Lake Winnipeg. In 2019 his lifelong friend John Weilgosh passed away. Gaylord always called him, ”My one armed chum”. When he was 78 years old he cut down a large elm tree, had it sawn into lumber and had his coffin built by another friend.

Gaylord was a man full of adventures and ideas.  He loved his Lord Jesus, loved his family and loved people.  He will be so missed.

Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour with viewing one hour prior to the service.  Interment followed in St. Ouen’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gaylord’s memory to Elim Baptist Church, Box 873, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0 or to a charity of one’s choice.

So sad to hear of Gaylord’s passing. I have fond memories of him. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him. Condolences also to his family and friends. The LORD draws near to the broken hearted — and we know we do not mourn as those who have no hope for the day is coming when the dead shall be raised— and we who are alive and remain … well, I’m sure you know the rest! BettyAnn’s and my thoughts and prayers are with you! B”H … James Regehr

Elizabeth, we were so surprised and saddened to hear of Gaylord’s passing. We will miss him driving
around town and waving at us in the store as he went by. We will also miss him at the Beauhead
jams where he wished everyone blessings and told us that he loved everyone there, and at the
Gospel jams. Take comfort knowing that he will be missed and thought about by many.

Just heard of Gaylord’s passing, and am reminded of the several pre-teen years when we were friends and lived across the tracks from each other. We spent many happy hours swimming in the Brokenhead river, snaring gophers, wrestling and other such activities that kids did in the countryside.

Sorry for your loss, and comforted in the knowledge that we will meet Gaylord again in the next life.
