It is with profound sadness that after a brief illness, we announce the passing of Elsie Henderson on May 2nd at Selkirk General Hospital at the age of 97 years.
Elsie was predeceased by her husband Art; daughter Beverley; sisters Edith Steiner, Mary Herntier, Martha Milbrandt, and Lily Rohrig; and brothers Henry, Albert, and Willie.
She is survived by her sons Gordie (Zina) and Earl (Lorraine); grandchildren Kristen, Jayne (Mike), Jarett, Kyle (Carly) and Kelsey; great-grandchildren Anna, Nicholas, Harper and Beckett; brothers Clarence (Gail), Harvey (Eileen) and many dear family and friends.
Elsie was born on October 3, 1925 to Caroline and Rudolph Pischke. She grew up tending to the family farm with her siblings. After she married Art on June 15, 1946, they travelled to various construction jobs where she would cook food for the workers. Elsie and Art began farming in the 1960s. She lived in her home in Whitemouth until 2016, when she chose to move into the Riverbend Manor, a place that she absolutely loved.
Elsie was a dedicated volunteer in the community. She was a long time member of the Happy Hours Seniors Club where she enjoyed playing cards, going on outings and doing her part to keep the club operational. She had a pivotal role in the creation of “New to You,” a second-hand store where the proceeds went to Christmas hampers. She delivered Meals on Wheels for several years and in 2013, Elsie was presented with a Driving Angel Award of Merit in recognition of transporting seniors in the community. She was a faithful member of the Ross United Church, which was a huge part of her life.
Cooking, baking, and making sure everyone was well fed was Elsie’s mission in life. From the many family dinners, to preparing food for the many organizations she belonged to, she was always prepared. She had homemade buns and pie crusts ready to use at a moment’s notice. Her cabbage rolls were a staple at any family gathering.
In her later years, Elsie enjoyed going for coffee with friends, playing bingo, going to the casino and driving around town and the back roads. She loved her close friends dearly and cherished her visits with them. If you knew Elsie, you knew she loved to give her opinion. She was always witty and liked to tease people whenever she had the chance. Above all else, Elsie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Her family would like to express their gratitude to everyone who visited or called her during her hospital stay. It brought her comfort and meant so much to her.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 10th at 1:00 PM at the Whitemouth Community Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Elsie’s memory to CancerCare Manitoba or the Redeemer Lutheran Church (PO Box 277 Whitemouth, Mb). Memories can be shared by visiting Elsie’s memorial page at soberingfuneralchapel.com.

Sincere condolences to the Henderson family. We lived across the street from the Hendersons in Whitemouth and one could not ask for better neighbors. Elsie was always community minded and always wanted to help where it was necessary. She was one of a kind. May God Bless the family and Comfort them in their sorrow. Your mother and grandmother will live in you forever in your memories.
