September 13, 1941 to August 28, 2023
Sadly, Elmer lost his battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Agnes (Barenz), daughters Cheryl ( Barry ), Cathy (Dave), grandsons Michael (Lisa), Chace and Cort, great granddaughter Oaklynn.
Elmer was born and grew up in Manigotagan in a large family. He learned early in life how to survive fishing and hunting and was known to have the “occasional” fist fight with his 8 older brothers.
He married Agnes at the age of 20 when he began his almost 40 year career as an underground miner. Mining took him to a number of places including Ontario, NWT, British Columbia, settling in Lac du Bonnet.
Elmer was well known in the community of Lac du Bonnet where he was involved in numerous community activities. He spent countless hours at the arena coaching minor hockey, playing hockey, organizing Metis tournaments, and helping to get ringette started, or just hanging out watching all the games cheering the boys on.
After his retirement he still got up at the crack of dawn to sip a coffee at Woody’s with his “equally as deaf” mining buddies and share stories, most of which may not have been based on facts.
Family was everything to Elmer, his door was always open whether it was the Meade homestead in Manigotagan or home in Lac du Bonnet. Many hours were spent at the water where “Uncle Elmer” loved to let all the kids drive the boat. Water skiing, swimming, canoeing, and fishing.
He was also active in curling and bowling, if he wasn’t playing he was cheering others on or telling them how to do it.
He also loved to partake in all of the sports that his grandsons were in. Whether it was taking Michael to hockey, or Chace and Cort rugby and football, he was always cheering them on and giving them advice on how to win.
Elmers past few months were brightened when his first great grandchild was born in May. She lightened up his days, family was everything to him.
There will be no funeral as per his “in no uncertain terms” wishes. What Elmer would want is for you to go have a coffee with family, friends or neighbours.

Agnus and family finding out that Elmer passed saddened us for his time on earth was shortened. We hope he didn’t suffer, for he is now in the hands of the Lord and we will join him again when our time is up. May your sorrow be lifted for he is in a better place. Charlie sally

Certainly remember Elmer and most, if not all of his brothers, whom I played ball and socialized with at other events in Bissett. I do remember Charlie, one of his older brothers, purchased a TV in the late 50’s and Dad and myself installed an antenna on Charlie’s roof on a 30′ pole. His home was on a rock bluff behind the ball diamond in Bissett. I believe he received the best reception at that time. I know we watched a “snowstorm” most of the time at our home then. I think Elmer was helping us install the antenna, putting him at ~ 17-18 and I was ~ 15 years old. We all had our hands full as the wind gave us concerns until it was supported with cables from the corners of the house. Funny, the things one remembers from the distant past. Generally speaking, I found all the boys/men from Henry down pleasant to socialize with. We do wish Agnes and family the best going forward.

My heartfelt condolences to Agnes. Cheryl, Kathy and family. Elmer will be missed in the community and we also will miss that hearty laugh he had. I considered him a very good friend. We spent many years bowling on the same team and last year he and Agnes floor curled on my team at the Pioneer Club. He is now at rest and in a better place. Memories and time will ease your pain and help your sorrow.

My most sincere condolences on Elmer’s passing. Cherish your wonderful memories. I’m sure they are many. Ron loved all the old mining stories he shared with Elmer and Henry; usually at the Arena. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Agnes, Cheryl, Cathy, and families we are very saddened to hear of Elmer’s passing. Elmer was always a great support for Troy and Charlotte during their hockey and ringette years also my grandsons, always had something good to say about everybody.
Sam and Troy always had great stories about mining with Elmer. I’m sure that Elmer and Sam are reminiscing already with they’re other mining buddies. Treasure all your memories.
Take care of yourselves.

Such sad news to hear of Elmers passing. He shared so much of his time with the community in so many facets. To Agnes (my grade 4 teacher), and all of the family, I send my condolences. I always looked forward to coming back to Lac du Bonnet and running into Elmer to share some laughs about when he coached me in minor hockey. Keep the ice flooded up there for us Elmer, you will be sorely missed by me and all who were blessed enough to know you.

Our condolences go out to aunt Agnes and cousins. We will sure miss uncle at family gatherings. We will miss his great sense of humor, funny jokes he told, and songs he sang with his daughter Cheryl and other family members. We always called him a cat because his eyes were so green. So many times little stories and funny jokes would be shared comparing him to a cat. When visiting aunt Agnes and uncle Elmer in Manigotogan or Lac du Bonnet they always served food and welcomed us with open arms. If we met uncle and aunty in Selkirk for lunch or coffee he always paid for the bill and would not take no for an answer. He had a heart of gold and spoke his mind something I admired about him. Clint enjoyed visiting him to talk about fishing and hunting, Clint said when he heard of uncle’s passing ” so the captain is no longer with us”. We will miss you uncle RIP Uncle Elmer.

And then there were 2. I am deeply saddened by yet another uncle’s passing. Uncle Elmer was always one of my all time favorite uncles and I loved his hearty laugh, story telling, singing, and great sense of humor!! I have him and Cheryl on video singing at a Manigo function and I will cherish it always and share it with my grandkids so they can enjoy it as well. I will miss you dear uncle until the end of my days. Deepest condolences to my cousins and auntie for their profound loss. The world is no longer as bright but his suffering is no more.
Love Niece and cousin Holly and my family
