Edmund Wittenberg

July 31,1934 ~ December 14, 2020

Edmund Wittenberg passed away peacefully at East Gate Lodge in Beausejour.  He was predeceased by his parents Ferdinand and Johanna; his brothers Henry, Clarence, Alfred; his sister Gertrude; and his beloved son Raymond.

Edmund will be remembered by his loving wife of 49 years, Edith (nee Gibbons); his daughter Cindy (Paul) and his grandchildren Heidi and Matthew.  He also leaves behind his sister Ida; sister-in-law Patricia; nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

Edmund was born on July 31, 1934 near Whitemouth, Manitoba.  Most of his life was spent working on the farm in River Hills.  Edmund also worked in Big Whiteshell cutting and hauling timber. Many cottages in the area were built from the lumber he supplied.  Edmund was skilled at mechanics and construction and was very business minded. His entrepreneurial ideas led him to introduce leaf cutter bees and certified alfalfa seed to the area.

Edmund married Edith in June 1971 and they had two children.  The family worked together on the farm.  In their later years, they made more time for travel.  Edmund believed in working hard and making the most of what he had.  He was grateful for what life gave him and instilled in his family the importance of generosity and sharing.

The family would like to thank all the staff at East Gate Lodge, especially the Rose Unit, for their exceptional care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to East Gate Lodge Recreation, Box 1690, Beausejour R0E 0C0.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, an immediate family service has been arranged.

Edith, Cindy, Paul, Matthew and Heidi… our deepest sympathy to you all… What good memories we hold dear to us as we think of Edmund. Edmund visiting Dennis at the ice fishing shack, always in a hurry, and not going anywhere…. He always liked the sausage that Dennis would cook up for him on the wood stove, and he would stay all afternoon talking about old times… It reminded him of years ago working in the bush camp. He always had time or made time to visit with you, no matter where you met up with him.. Your in our thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. Love Dennis & Rosalie

I was so sad to learn of Edmund’s passing. I came to know him while I spent many hours visiting with my mom, Irene Woroniak, in the Rose Unit over the last two years. Edmund would always have a kind word to say and we chatted many times. He was the most gentle soul and a pleasure to know. Sadly, my mom passed in March so I will be thinking of you as we get through this first Christmas without our special people.
