Diane Wiewel

In Memorial

1939 ~ 2016

Diane passed away at age 77, in the Pinawa Hospital, surrounded by those she loved. She leaves behind her husband Tony, daughters Lori (Dennis), Terra, sons Gary (Kelly), Cory (Clarrice), TJ (Chasity), brothers Ron (Elaine) and Glen (Lynn), eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Born in Winnipeg, Diane always took great pride in being Canadian and the role Canada played serving during World War II.  Her Uncle Bill Thomson survived the treacherous North Atlantic as a merchant seaman, but her uncle James Thomson was shot down over Germany after one of his many sorties over Europe with the RAF.  Son TJ is named in his memory and honour.

Diane enjoyed the outdoors, cross-country skiing when younger and able, and was always delighted to go camping throughout much of our summer vacations together.  Journeys west took us to some of the most splendid mountain hide-aways as we continued our search for yet another hot springs to soak in as we traveled to the coast, Tofino being one of her favourite destinations.  Alternate summers found us camping in the Canadian Shield of Ontario, with many favourite spots like Rushing River, Blue Lake, Neys, Wawa, Bancroft, and Sudbury, all on our way to Ottawa to visit her mum, Olive and brother, Glen.  A visit to Parliament Hill, watching the Changing Of The Guard at Rideau Hall, and seeing some of the many museums were always looked-forward to, when we visited the capital city.

Diane was a funny, caring, sweet woman who enjoyed the company of others and always opened our doors, welcoming many of our family and friends to summers of fishing, kayaking, boating, biking, etc.  Her summer highlight was always the Pinawa Birthday Parade, and the subsequent beach activities that followed.  She especially loved having one of the Hospital Auxiliary burgers. The fireworks usually capped off a wonderful weekend.

Despite her years of decreased mobility, Diane never dwelled on her situation.  Her joys in life included: time with her grandchildren; watching them play hockey; enjoying a rum at the Saturday meat draw at the Pinawa Club; key lime pies; and – of course – ice cream for her dessert after supper.

Diane’s family and I would like to thank all the wonderful caring staff at the Pinawa Hospital, the EMS crews that occasionally came to our assistance, as well as many friends and neighbours who helped out when needed.

A Memorial Service for Diane will be held at the Pinawa Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 23, at one o’clock.  If anyone wishes, a donation may be made, in Diane’s memory, to the Pinawa Health Auxiliary.
