Daniel Edmund Karklin passed away on May 6, 2023 at the age of 65 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is predeceased by mother Dorothy (Dolly) and father Edmund, and survived by sisters, Georgina (Ian) and Dorothy; his nieces Cindy (Chevy) and Jillian; nephew Gavin; great nephew Liam and great nieces Emma and Megan.
Even through his early years, his loving, teasing, and warm personality shined. His grade 1 report card captured it perfectly: “talks incessantly.” He had a great sense of humour and always had a joke or wisecrack the moment he saw you. Friends have reflected, “He could light up a room!” His positive outlook and humour in the face of tough times amazed many including hospital staff during his battle with terminal cancer.
He was generous with his time and with his work. He was a respected and skilled electrician, and ran an independent business for many years. Even when he wasn’t working, he was often giving advice for the “do it yourself” family members – “you can do that, but you’ll void your home insurance policy” or “the wires should be ok to touch,” followed by a laugh. He often was generous with offering free handiwork to friends and family, and even traveled down to Tennessee to build an enormous fence for his sister’s yard.
The family home in Lettonia was at the centre of much of his life. After some periods of time away from high school and in early adulthood, he moved back in 1990, where his mother, Dorothy, still resided, helping to allow her to stay there until her passing last July, for which we know she was so grateful.
He loved life in Lettonia. He particularly enjoyed gardening and picking vegetables (letting his sister Dorothy do the processing) and goldeye fishing during the summers. His favorite of all activities was taking long walks every evening with his three beloved dogs Toby, Gibbs and Crosby, who missed him dearly during his hospital stays.
He was incredibly grateful for the treatment and friendship he received while spending more time than he would have liked in hospitals over the past few years. Particularly, we want to thank the fabulous and caring staff at the Pine Falls Hospital and the Cancer Care team at the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg.
A Celebration of Life will take place on July 8, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Lettonia Cemetery followed by a gathering at the family home.

We got to know Dan approximately 10 years ago through work. And we soon became friends. Dan had a big heart was always willing to help somebody with a little project. He had a great sense of humour, good storyteller, and he would take his time and talk to you all day long. He was never in a rush. He will truly be missed. Rest in peace, my friend.

Danny was very Special to both Dale & myself. You may not see him for a considerable time but just pick up conversation where you left off when you meet again. With his skills he would do work for us and then visit for an hour or so. We shared many laughs. Know he will be missed by many.

Oh Dorothy & Georgie. I am so sorry. Even though I knew this is how his suffering would finally end…I just didn’t want to hear it. My memories of Danny start when he was that goofie little kid in the 60s. His endearing sense of humour was not fully developed yet but even then he was entertaining. I also fondly remember him visiting us on his own when we lived in Thompson in the very early 70s. His favourite hangout…bowling alley…too young for pub! I was so homesick for LduB & SO SO happy to have him there..someone from home! Funny the things you remember sometimes. He grew into a wonderful & warm & funny as hell kinda guy. My Mom just loved him. If he was doing work at Bonnie Vista he’d always stop to tease her & she’d laugh & just love the attention. He had such a genuine pleasant way with people…everybody loved Danny. I have always admired your whole Karklin family & the life you all created in that lovely big beautiful house…just a bustling warm home headed by the sweetest woman on earth… your Mom. What a nice life he had with family & so many good friends & of course the best part…dogs who were nuts for him!!! Hugs to all of Danny’s family & friends. I am so sorry for your loss. We met Dan as customers of his skills as an electrician. Many trips to our home on Pinawa Bay provided excellent service for our furnace checks and subsequent friendship. Dan always had time for coffee and our home still resonates with the memories of our humorous conversations. We shared our love for nature, and the love for our pets brought never ending stories. I’ve known Dan most of my life, our family had a cabin on Karklins Kreek (the 4th one down, The Hills family) and he was always willing to stop and talk to us if he saw us wandering around the area.
