Cheryl Joan Rohrig (nee Honkey)

1955 ~ 2012

After a yearlong battle with Glioblastoma Cancer, surrounded by her loved ones, Cheryl  Joan Rohrig (nee Honkey) passed away peacefully  on Friday, September 21st, 2012 at the Pinawa Hospital at the age of 56.

Cheryl was born in Whitemouth, MB on October 18, 1955.  She was raised by her parents Gloria and Norman Honkey in Seven Sisters, MB and attended school in the Seven Sisters/Pinawa/Whitemouth area.  On June 9, 1985 Cheryl was married to Tim Rohrig and together they have resided in River Hills, MB. Cheryl was employed by Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) until her date of diagnosis which she then took a medical leave and spent the best quality time with Tim, her family and friends.

Remembering Cheryl are her loving husband Tim and their children Donald (Michelle) Naismith; Terinia (Ken) Bruchanski, Payton, Sloane; Michael (Amanda) Owen, Cooper Naismith; Juanita Lambert (Mike Cole), Lukas Lambert, Tyler and Samantha Cole.  She will be forever in the thoughts of her dad Norman Honkey,  her devoted sister Arleen (Harry) Pluchinski, Chris (Daughter Jerzi) Pluchinski, Jen (Brent) Brandon, Rylynn Palichuck, Holly Pluchinski (Andrew Shallcross) and her special “Hydro Stinky” friend, cousin and Sister-in-law Vicki (Kent) Rohrig. Cheryl is predeceased by her Mother Gloria Honkey, Father-in-law Eric Rohrig and Brother-in-law David Rohrig.

While it’s true that Cheryl had many passions – from her love of travel right down to her love of the movie “Dirty Dancing” – her greatest love was that of her husband Tim and family.  Cheryl found joy in organizing her work BBQ’s, spending time with her grandchildren, and camping from the moment the snow was gone until it returned.  Above all attributes that Cheryl possessed, her strength and courage for herself and everyone was nothing short of inspirational.  She is loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Cheryl’s family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the medical staff of the Pinawa Hospital and Health Science Center, as well as Cancer Care Manitoba.  Their professionalism and understanding was greatly appreciated and helped Cheryl and the entire family to navigate through the most difficult time of her life.

A memorial for Cheryl was held  at Sobering Funeral Chapel, in Beausejour, on Monday, September 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.

Following the memorial, internment took place in St. Paul Lutheran Church in River Hills, MB.

In lieu of flowers it is Cheryl’s wish to have donations made to:  The Guardian Angel Caring Room at 1018 – 675 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

Tim and family, please know you are in our thoughts always. Cheryl was such a wonderful person. I have such great memories from when we were kids out at Granny’s and Uncle Norman and Aunt Gloria’s. I loved how she also took such an interest in our family history and devoted so much time to it. We had lots of nice chats on Facebook, sometimes every morning for quite a stretch of time. I’m sending hugs to all of you and the family and to Uncle Norman and Arleen and her family. See you Monday.

No words can express our sorrow and condolences for all of my family. It has been many years since I have seen all of you, but I have been in contact with Cheryl many times over the computer. She will always be in our hearts and missed deeply. To all of you by her side special hugs as I know how hard it is to watch a loved one slip through our life time and into another. May she spread her wings as a beautiful butterfly and be our guardian angle! Love Tanya

We are so grateful to have had Cheryl as our close friend, at and beyond work, in and out of her favourite campgrounds. She became part of our family, and we strove to be part of hers. We always drew happiness from Cheryl’s sunny disposition, and marvelled at her organizing skills. She set a high standard for us all. All these things we will never forget, while joining you in missing her very much.

To Cheryl’s Family I extend my most sincere and heartfelt sympathy. I know that words seem so inadequate at this time, but I know from my own experience that they do bring peace and comfort. Please cherish and Treasure your memories of Cheryl, she was a very special person and she touched many lives. She will never be forgotten.

The last time I saw Cheryl (and I had not seen her in many, many years) was at the Wpg. Airport. She, Tim, Vicki & Kent were off on their vacation together in 2010 (I believe). I later learned about her illness from Vicki (her special “Hydro Stinky” friend, cousin and Sister-in-law). Cheryl and I attended school in the Townsite together and then Whitemouth and spent time together in the years of our youth. In my heart I knew I needed to get in touch with her and I am so happy that I was able to share some e-mails with her about our families, share some memories of the days gone by and hopefully I offered her some comfort with my words, thoughts and my prayers.

My most vivid memory of Cheryl and something that set an example for me, and put me in awe of her at a very young age was her strength, her determination and her commitment to raising and caring for her children. They have lost a wonderful “Mother” & their children have lost a wonderful “Grandmother” . . .

I can still hear her laugh after all these years and I too love the movie “Dirty Dancing”. My only wish is that Cheryl would not have had to battle this horrible disease and that she could have had “The Time of Her Life” for years to come instead of having to leave this earth and all of her loved ones behind at such a young age.

This quote is how I believe Cheryl fought her battle . . .

“I’ve never been one to run from a challenge”. Patrick Swayze

    Tim and children,Arlene and Family,

Your wife, your mother, your grandmother, your sister, your aunt, your inlaw, Cheryl, absolutely, was, in my whole life, the strongest person I ever knew, and with that strength, managed to maintain the integrity of also being the nicest person I ever was so fortunate to know, to Love and to mourn. It has been many years since she and I went fishing, snow-shoeing, carpentering,but-without a doubt, I never knew anyone that had a bigger or better heart than Cheryl. The heavens are trully blessed with her arrival, and we that remain on earth, have lost a Great one.

Tim and Arleen and Families – my dear friend will always be in our hearts. Al described Cheryl as being the person you didn’t have to make up kind comments about – she really was the most caring, kindest, strongest and loving person in our lives. We will always miss her but hope her strength has rubbed onto us and all of you.
    XO Bonnie and Alan McLean
