She was predeceased by her husband William in May 1975, son Harold in infancy. Her parents Stanley and Pauline Shumilak, sisters Mary, Gladys, Cecelia, Victoria and Helen, as well as brothers Stanley and Kazmir, and son-in-law Bernard Mariash in December 1998.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Virginia Mariash (Harry Thiessen), Wilfred, Sylvia Mazur (Lloyd) and Larry; her grand-children: David (Sharlynne) Mariash, Ronald (Arlene) Mariash, Karen (Randy) Klos, Patricia Mariash, Susan (Lance) Mariash/Clarke, Jim (Janet) Campbell, Lori (Ernie) Zacharis, Kevin (Renee) Mazur and Kimberley (Dane) Belshe, as well as thirteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Caroline was born in Ladywood on December 16, 1915, the second youngest of 8 children. She married William October 26, 1935 and together they farmed in Brokenhead, raised 4 children and retired from the farm in 1972. In 1976 she moved to St Andrews to live with her daughter, Sylvia, and son-in-law, Lloyd, where she was known to all as Babci.

Caroline worked at the Moss Spur plant for several summers, also at the sewing factory in Beausejour. She worked as cook at both Kozy Korner and Gateway Restaurant in Beausejour. Caroline started her own catering business under the name “Caroline’s Country Style Catering” and ran the business successfully for many years. In her seventies, she worked at the St. Andrews Airport restaurant, where she mastered making the “Special Big Cinnamon Buns”.

Caroline baked and decorated many wedding cakes. Her greatest pride and joy was the 1967 Centennial Cake which she baked and decorated for the Town of Beausejour. The cake weighed 500 pounds. She enjoyed sewing, and created numerous bridesmaid dresses over the years.

Caroline was a 4-H Leader for the Ladywood Garden Club for 10 years, served on the Beausejour Hospital Board and was chairperson for St. Joseph’s Polish National Church until she retired in 2010. In St Andrews, she became involved with the community club, with the Bingos, whist drives, and SASS.

Caroline’s many hours were spent baking Easter Bread, making perogies, cabbage buns and cabbage rolls for family and friends. She loved to crochet and made many afghans; enjoyed her card games every month, and loved her Wednesday night Bingo at St. Andrews Community Club.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 19, 2011 at 11:00 AM with a viewing one half-hour prior to the service at Sobering Funeral Chapel located in Beausejour, Manitoba with Very Reverend Wesley Cwieka officiating.

Cremation and burial will take place at a later date.
