It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our husband, father and grandpa. Barry passed away in Beausejour Hospital on March 8, 2022, at the age of 70 years.
Barry will be deeply missed by his loving wife Carol, his children Kimberley (Gary), Diana (James), and Daniel (Emma), grandson Boone, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William (Bill) and Olga Frailick.
Barry was born and raised in Beausejour, Manitoba where his passion for horses began alongside his beloved father, Bill. Barry worked with the Winnipeg Police Service for 27 years, retiring as Detective Sergeant. He married his wife Carol in 1992, and together they raised three fine children, several special horses, and other furry animals in his beautiful home near Birds Hill Park.
Barry was a highly respected, hardworking, and family-oriented man. He was always driving something, motorcycles, semi trucks, heavy machinery and countless teams of horses. You name it, Dad drove it. There are many wild stories from his times travelling, breaking horses, and enjoying cocktails with numerous friends. He will be forever missed and held so closely to our hearts.
Our family would like to extend our deepest thanks to Dr. Daphne Schmidt and all the staff at Beausejour hospital for their compassionate care. We would like to further express our appreciation to friends and family for their ongoing support.
Barry’s funeral will be held at Sobering’s Funeral Chapel on March 18, 2022 at 1:00pm, in Beausejour, Manitoba.

Carol and family, it was with a heavy heart that I heard of Barry’s passing from Norm. Barry and I grew up together and went to school from grade one through to grade twelve. We did loads of things together, including being pals, fighting, playing pool at Pete’s, driving around in Barry’s old Chevy and trying to buy beer off of older guys! LOL! There was always a gang of us that hung together, Barry, myself, Bob Kozak, Denis Robbie, John Kososki, Charles Wielgosh, Ricky Kaatz, Cliff Langner and Lawrence Ferchoff. Two or more of us were always together and sometimes Barry’s Chevy was packed full! In later years, I moved away but, Barry and I always kept in touch. Although there was a time when we were out of touch for a year or more, Barry was always around to lend a helping hand to my mom if I called on him to do so. We always gave “Nellie” a hard time when we were at her place and she didn’t hesitate to slap both of us with her wooden spoon. We just laughed more to get her more riled up!! In the past several years, Barry and I kept in touch more often and my wife Anne and I along with our wee dogs visited Barry and Carol often and were guests of their generosity. I spoke to Barry only a couple of weeks ago and as usual, we both cursed the government and Trudeau which was standard fare for both of us!! We were ALWAYS on the same page politically and as far as the state of the union, (so to speak) went. I will miss Barry and our periodic rants a great deal. Rest in peace my friend and perhaps we will meet again some day, “on the other side”!!

So sad to hear of Barry’s passing. Barry and I were in recruit class together and later were partners on Cruiser Car 1104 in Division 11. He was the best partner a guy could wish for and always had your back. When his brother, Bill, purchased a race horse we became avid fans of “Interchangeable” and together watched many of his races. We also shared times at the cottage at Bird River. We were a couple of farm boys in the big city and those common experiences were part of the bond of our friendship. Some of the best laughs I had on the job were during our time together. He was one of a kind. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

There isn’t an ocean deep enough to hold the tears shed when we heard of Barry’s passing.
A lifelong friend, the selflessness and depth of character of this gentle, loving soul is best summed up in the speech he gave at our wedding as the best man. “They call me the best man but really I’m not. The best man just got married.” Through the graciousness of his devoted wife, Carol, I was able to voice my unconditional love to Barry over the phone when he was critically I’ll . For that, I am eternally grateful and will cherish forever.
To Kimberley, Diana, and Daniel – you are his thumbprints and no doubt will do well in life.
May you rest in peace our dear friend

Carol and family, we are so sorry for your loss. Although we haven’t seen Barry and you for years, we will remember him forever. Barry was a pleasure to work with, he and our group had many good times together and had many stories to share, all amongst ourselves of course. Regrettably we are away in the USA and will not be able to attend the service in person. We wish you well.

Carol and family, I am so sorry to hear of Barry’s sudden passing. He was such a great guy loved by the whole Cherrey family. Barry could certainly entertain those around him with his stories from the past. I remember his many visits to our family home and the laughs shared between Barry and Norm. I loved that Barry would bring out his horses and sleigh and take several of us in the community at Christmas to go around town and sing carols. He will certainly be remembered with such fond memories. Sending hugs and prayers to you all.

Carol and family I am so sorry for your loss. You don’t know me but Barry and I grew up on Gertrude Avenue in Beausejour. I was several years older but will always remember what a kind and friendly person he was. R.I.P. Barry.

It is the end of an era as I lose my best friend Barry. Carol has lost a loving husband and Kimberley, Diana and Daniel have lost a loving father.
How do you summarize a 55 year old friendship in a couple of paragraphs. There are too many stories to tell but the memories will remain.
Barry loved life and he lived life to the fullest. He found the love of his life in Carol and he had 3 wonderful children that he loved. Barry worked hard his whole life and provided for his family. He treated his friends with respect. He loved animals especially his horses.
When I think of Barry, I think of a sign that my mom hung in her home. True friends are like gems, precious and rare. I lost a gem last week.

Carol, Kimberley, Diana and Daniel,
We are so so very sorry to hear about the passing of Barry. I have so many fond memories of events shared over the years, and so many childhood memories with Barry and Carol involved. I could always count on Barry to tell a good story, and especially one involving adventures with my parents in the good old days. Our thoughts are with all of you in this very difficult time.

I have been thinking of you all and my heart is heavy. My deepest sympathies for your loss. My memories of Barry are fond; I can recall his laugh being so genuine and making me smile. I have memories of the adults gathering while us kids played on many occasions, but I’ll never forget the carriage ride he took us on and getting to see the horses in action. His big belly laughs still ring in my ears when I think about that day. Sending you all hugs.
