Felix Johannes Christiaan Gryseels

In Memorial

1928 ~ 2017

Peacefully at the age of 88, with his family by his side, Felix Gryseels passed away in Pinawa on February 3, 2017.  Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Gertie (Gerry), grandsons Richard, and Ryan (Melissa), great grandson Austin, great granddaughter Amber; his son Frank (Janneke), grandsons Rutger and Jeroen (Meighan).   He also leaves to mourn his brothers Wil, Cass, Appie, Michel, sisters Mia, and Weiss, sister-in-law Tina, and their spouses and sister-in-law Helga as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family in the Netherlands and Germany.  Felix was predeceased by his son Louie, his wife Gertie, his partner Truus, brothers Pietje and Geert, sister-in-law Tiny; bother in-law Willy, and his parents Anna and Aloysius Gryseels.

Felix was born in Tegelen, The Netherlands.  He married the love of his life Gertie in 1954 and they immigrated to Winnipeg, MB Canada where they had three children.  He was employed as a welder in Winnipeg until 1966 when he commenced employment with Atomic Energy of Canada and moved his family to Pinawa. He was proud of his career successes and retired from AECL as a Machine Shop Foreman (Tool & Dye Maker) in May 1991.

Following the death of his wife Gertie in 1990 and his retirement in 1991, Felix returned to the Netherlands where a year later he met his second partner, Truus.  Over several years, they traveled extensively in Europe and Canada.  He returned to Canada many times for visits with his children.  When Truus died in 2013, Felix suffered a stroke and returned to Canada to live with his children.  It was his wish to spend the remainder of his days in the peace and beauty of Pinawa.

Felix had a zest for life.  He enjoyed card playing, fishing and many sports – especially golf and in the earlier years curling.  He was an avid soccer fan and especially enjoyed watching his children play various sports.  He loved to have a good time and especially enjoyed the accomplishments of his children and grandsons.  He was elated with the birth of his great grandchildren and they held a special bond.  He was always happy to share stories of his homeland and life experiences with his family.

Cremation has taken place and upon Felix’s request a private family service and interment will be held at a later date at the Pinawa Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pinawa Hospital – Cancercare Unit.
