Surrounded by her loving family, Stella Soroka (nee Lazeczko) passed away peacefully on January 1, 2016 at Pinawa Hospital, two days short of her 92nd birthday.
Stella was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Nick Soroka; her mother Mary Holyk; her father Elias Lazeczko; her brother Myros Lazeczko; her son-in-law Edwin Funk, as well as numerous sisters and brothers in-law, nephews and great nephews.
She is survived by her daughters Evelyn, Linda (Jim), Kathy (Garry) and Diana; grandchildren Alanna (Sam), Colin (Jody), Steven (Leanna), Kimberly (Dave), David, Jonathan (Jaclyn); nine great-grandchildren; sister Olga Soroka; brother Walter Lazecko (Rose), as well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Stella was born on January 3, 1924 and grew up in Winnipeg’s north end. She married Nick Soroka in 1944 and after a short detour to California in the late 1950s, they settled in Lac du Bonnet to raise their family where Stella continued to reside until her passing.
Throughout the years, Stella was very active in the community. She was a lifetime member of the Horticultural Society, and supported the Lac du Bonnet Library and the Pioneer Club, lending a hand wherever it was needed. Her talents included gardening, ceramics, and quilting. She was recognized several years ago by the Lac du Bonnet Riverside Quilters for the quality of many beautiful quilts and for her fellowship. Everyone in the family, down to the newest great-grandchild had at least one special quilt “made with love” by Mom or Grandma.
Stella was cherished by her whole family. Caring, insightful, practical, and funny, she was an inspiration on how to live life to the fullest. Her passing leaves a giant void in the lives of her children and grandchildren with whom she shared so many special family moments and unique relationships. She will also be greatly missed by her sister and brother, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Stella recently triumphed from an accidental fall and subsequent partial hip replacement in mid-October. Determined to return to her home and resume her life, she was an amazing pillar of strength, determination and perseverance to all.
At Stella’s request, a private family funeral will be held. Flowers are gratefully declined; however if desired, a contribution in her name can be made to the Lac du Bonnet Library or Community Hall or a charity of one’s choice.

So sorry to hear of Stella’s passing. I got to know her at quilting.
She was a very kind woman sharing her knowledge and sometimes a much needed little piece of fabric.
Saw her practically every Monday along with Olga shopping at Campbells when we lived in Lac du Bonnet.
My sincere sympathy to all her family.
