We sadly announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother (baba) and great-grandmother, Helen, aged 87, on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at East Gate Lodge in Beausejour, Manitoba.

Her memory will be cherished by her daughter Frances (John) Bodnar, son Allan (Norma); grandchildren Jonathan, Amber (Dennis), Ken, Bryna (Kurtis) and Shannon; great-grandchildren Kelsee, Taylor, Brittany, Brayden, Teagan and Rylee.  Also surviving are her brother Joseph Gmiterek (Olga), sisters-in-law Teenie Gmiterek, Jean Gmiterek, Pearl Gmiterek and Tena Harrack as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, William, on December 14, 2001; her parents Joseph and Caroline Gmiterek; brothers Mike (Mary), Anton (Nellie), John, Stanley and Edward; sisters Katie Novak, Jean Novak (Mike), Mary More (Frank) and Rose Duma (Joe).

Helen was born in the small farming community of Allegra, Manitoba on December 16, 1926, where she grew up with her ten brothers and sisters.  She married William on October 26, 1946 and they farmed in the Allegra district until retiring to Beausejour in 1997.

She was a quiet and hard working person.  She enjoyed gardening, baking and cooking, and playing cards.

The family would like to thank the staff at East Gate Lodge Personal Care Home for their loving care and compassion extended to our Mom during the past two years.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour, MB.  Interment to follow in the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Beausejour.

Pallbearers will be Ken Seymour, Randy Gmiterek, Brian Gmiterek, Clifford Duma, Kurtis Nordine and Dolf Fandych.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St. Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2 or a charity of one’s choice.
