It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our sister and friend, Sylvia (age 68) on December 30, 2023 at the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg, MB. Sylvia was born on September 30, 1955 in Dauphin, Manitoba.
Sylvia was pre-deceased by her parents, Fredrick and Anna Wasyliuk, sister, Betty Heykoop and brother, Tony Wasyliuk. She is survived by her siblings Mary Urbanowski of Kelowna, BC, Celia (Mike) Goyek of Dauphin, Nellie (Larry) Anderson of Portland, Oregon, Vicky (Keith) Bradshaw of Chilliwack, BC, Wally (Audrey) Wasyliuk of Concorde, ON, Olga Wasyliuk of Winnipeg, Ted Wasyliuk of Shuswap, BC, Ernie (Ann) Wasyliuk of Armstrong, BC, Jeanette Dutka of Chilliwack, BC and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Sylvia was the last of 12 children born to Fred and Anna. She lived in Pine River, Manitoba and attended Favor School from Kindergarten to Grade 6. When that one room school closed, she went to Pine River School for Grades 7 and 8. Her parents then sold the farm and moved to Winnipeg. Sylvia attended the SDA Academy for Grades 9 and 10. Grades 11 and 12 were completed at the Portage Collegiate Institute where she lived with Olga.
After graduation in June of 1973, she started her Medical Radiation Technology/Laboratory Assistance training in July, 1973. During this training, she worked part-time at Park Manor Personal Care home in the dietary department. Upon completion, she began her career at the Beausejour District Hospital on November 5, 1975. After a couple of years, she was promoted to Charge Technologist and retained that position until she retired in January, 2011.
Sylvia enjoyed curling, golfing, fishing, camping, travelling and spending time with her life-long friends, Chris and Ardith Tomasson and family. She has travelled to many destinations including Hawaii, England, Scotland, Fiji, and Ukraine to name a few. Above all, Sylvia cherished her time spent at her cottage in Gull Lake.
The family would like to thank all the Medical staff at the Women’s Hospital and the Health Science Centre for keeping Sylvia comfortable and for their care and compassion.
Cremation has taken place. A private celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
If so inclined, donations in her memory may be made to the Beausejour Hospital TV fund, Box 1614, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0.

Our deepest condolence to Ollie, Janet and the rest of Sylvia’s family, and especially to Chris and Ardith. There are no words that describe the years we shared working together, laughing, and sharing each other’s woes and happiness. She was a dedicated and talented xray technician who was widely respected by every radiologist who read her films. Beausejour Hospital was rewarded by her efforts of teaching each member of diagnostics to do their very best in the work day . I am very proud to have been her friend and will miss her. May your soul find peace.

Deepest sympathies to all of Sylvia’s family and friends on the loss of your treasured sister and friend. I worked at the Beausejour Hospital as a health care aide for many many years when Sylvia was there. I often found myself in the xray room, assisting with in- and out-patients to have their x-rays. I can still clearly hear, in my head, Sylvia’s voice and the cadence of her instructions, for our many patients. She was a special lady, professional and well respected in our community. I will miss waving at her as she was out for her walks. Rest in peace Sylvia.
