1932 ~ 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Norman Schewe on February 16, 2023 at the East Gate Lodge in Beausejour.
Dad was born on June 4th, 1932 and raised in Green Bay. He married his lifelong partner, Lorraine in 1953. Together they raised their family in the Beausejour area. Dad was a ‘jack of all trades’: a truck driver, a carpenter, and a grain farmer by occupation. He built many houses in the surrounding area all the while building up his parcel of land and carrying on the family farming tradition. Dad was always there to lend a helping hand especially when it came to building. Two handy bits of advice he gave: it’s always easier to build new than fix old and never wallpaper with your wife.
After he retired, he and Lorraine drove their RV North, South, East and West. He especially enjoyed their travels to Alaska where they fished for salmon and took in the wildlife. Those trips provided many stories that he found joy in sharing in the years that followed. Singing in the Zion Lutheran Church Choir with family and friends was one of his great pleasures. He loved to joke around and share laughter with those in his company. Many happy hours were spent around the kitchen table with friends and family playing cards, entertaining, and telling tales.
Always an outdoorsman, dad loved to fish, hunt and tour the countryside looking for wildlife. He took pride in keeping his farmstead well-tended until retiring to Beausejour. At that time, he dabbled in golfing, floor curling, and activities at Stony Plains. However, you can take the man off the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the man. He delighted in taking every chance he got to zip back to the farm to help Kevin with whatever needed doing. Those daily jaunts kept him youthful beyond his years.
He will be lovingly remembered by Lorraine, his wife of 69 years; his children Les (Annette), Brian (Elisangela), and Karen (Art); grandchildren Kyle (Jess), Travis (Carrie), Jared (Sarah), Brett (Megan), Lauren, Justina (Jared), Kelsee, Taylor (Tyrone), Levi, and Claire; great-grandchildren Daxton, Bellamy, Bostyn, Ozborne, Aidan, Harrison, Elizabeth, and Violet. Dad is survived by one sister, Esther (Bill), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was most recently predeceased by his beloved son Kevin and lifelong friend and brother Ed, as well as having previously lost four sisters and four other brothers.
The family wishes to thank the many compassionate staff who supported him over the past couple of years: Dr. Van Rensburg and the caregivers at the Rose and Shamrock Units at Eastgate Lodge, especially Barbie and Babitha who cared for him right up until his passing.
Dad’s distinguished presence and admirable character will be our cherished memory. You live on in the hearts and minds of the loving family you left behind.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, East Gate Lodge or a charity of choice.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Ave E, Beausejour. A private interment at Green Bay Cemetery to follow at a later date.
