Judith Joanne Hattie

Judith Hattie passed away peacefully at Pinawa Hospital on November 8, 2021.

Judy was born and raised in Winnipeg, growing up in East Kildonan with her parents John and Peggy Yaremchuk, and brother Gerald.  After achieving her MSc in biology, she took up teaching, first in Whitemouth, where she met John Hattie, with whom she would spend 44 happy years, and then to Beausejour, spending her 35 year career encouraging her students to love and respect the natural world.  She was very proud of her students, and always glad to hear updates from them after graduation.

She spent her retired years with husband John, and daughter Charlotte, focusing on the interests dearest to her heart:  her family, menagerie of animals, gardening, home design and decoration, and the crossword puzzles that she and Charlotte worked on together.

Judy was a warm and wonderful woman, the bedrock of her family, and will be desperately missed by the family and friends who loved her.  She was predeceased by John, and her parents, and is survived by daughter Charlotte, and brother Gerald.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place, and no service will be held.  In lieu of a formal service, let her memory be a blessing, and she would be honored best by planting a tree, a garden, or helping animals in need.

Mrs. Hattie’s biology class was always interesting and she definitely enhanced my interest in the environment. Thanks to her I was introduced to Rachel Carson and I still remember many of the scientific names of local animals. We were very lucky to have her at our school . I will definitely plant a tree in her honour and memory next summer!

John and Charlotte- I’m so sorry for your loss. Judy (Mrs. Hattie) taught me so much about biology, but so much more than that: about being being curious, about being a strong woman, about not being afraid to stand up for what you believe in.

She was what a teacher should be, and I’m grateful for her influence on my life.

I loved biology because Mrs.Hattie loved teaching it. She was encouraging but most of all believed I could achieve excellence. The most valuable lesson she taught me was confidence. I’m so sorry to hear of her passing. My condolences to Charlotte.

    Mrs Hattie-
That picture is from when I knew you best! The electric coffee cup warmer on your desk with the crazy hippie eco-friendly posters in your classroom!
With your help we won the group Canadian science fair and Carla won the individual!
And sorry our crayfish experiments made your classroom stink

To John and Charlotte and the rest of the Hattie family my deepest sympathies.

Judith Hattie was a great teacher. We were lucky to have her in Beausejour at Edward Schreyer Senior High School.
I think my love of biology came from her and I know I enjoyed my classes with her and our Grade 12 trip to the zoo for sure on our interactive test assignment. Something very different from other classes. I think this love rubbed off on my daughter who loves biology and was fortunate to have a great teacher here in Alberta as well.

Mrs. Hattie has left a legacy I am sure for many former students. She will be missed.
