Shortly after sunset on April 26, peacefully at home surrounded by family, Debbie began her journey to the stars.
Debbie is survived by her husband Dale and beautiful daughters Amanda, Allison and Alanah; sister Christine (Al), brothers Steve (Sandra), Tim, Allan (Kathy), George, Shelley (Perry), Dayna, Stephen (Sheila) ; granddaughter Haylee; father-in-law Denis Altstadt; nieces and nephews, Jason, Amber, Justin, Ashley, Shannon, Brittney, Marissa, Andrew, Courtney and Whitney. Debbie was predeceased by her parents Jack and Rita Hewitt; mother-in-law Donna Altstadt and her aunty Barbra.
Debbie was born on January 17, 1960 in her grandmothers house at 8 Silverfields Road Harrogate Yorkshire, England. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1965, and lived in Stonewall and Stony Mountain before settling in the St James area of Winnipeg. Deb attended Hedges, John Taylor Collegiate and graduated from Saint James Collegiate.
Debbie was an A&W car hop in 1976 where she met her soulmate Dale, who she married in 1979. They were married 41 years, and if you were to ask Dale he’ll admit she straightened him out and he’ll be forever indebted to her.
Deb lived in Brandon, Gillam and finally settled in Lac du Bonnet. Deb worked at Dancyts Foods for 30 some years she loved working there, she was not happy when she had to retire. Deb was a fantastic mom, grandmother, cook, friend and winemaker (Debbies Rocket Fuel day and night blends) who loved the color red, just like her husbands drag racer. Deb will never be replaced as she was perfection.
We thank the wonderful staff at Cancer Care for their work fighting this awful disease. Dr Kim, Dr Cooke, Dr Bruneau, Dr Lamoureux, Connie, Rhonda and Wanda. Please make a donation to Cancercare to continue the fight.
Thank you to everyone in Lac du Bonnet for all your visits with Deb. We are grateful for all the kind words, food, cards and flowers. We have lost an irreplaceable woman.
Cremation has taken place no services are planned as we continue the fight.
When you look at the night sky the Debbie star will be the brightest in the sky.
Offer Condolence for the family of Deborah Wendy Altstadt ( Hewitt )

I cannot believe you are gone. You were one of the very first people that we met in Gillam. I think the first party we went to was at your house. You made me feel welcome. Your house was always open for coffee and visits. You welcomed me into your friendship group and will always hold a very special place in my heart. Your smile and laughter were contagious! There will always be a strong bond among the Gillam friends, even if we live apart and take different roads . Our most sincere condolences to you Dale, Amanda, Allison and Alanah.

So stunned to hear of this wonderful person passing..She did everything with kindness, and wonderful smile on her face. She wished me a Happy Birthday and I planned to see her when these restrictions passed. Debbie was a great person and I called her Mrs Dancyts. She is out of pain and surely rip with the Lord. Will be sorely missed in our community. Condolences to her family….

Debbie first met me carrying Kim in my Amauti and raking the front yard, and she befriended me right away, saying your son and daughter are in my daughter’s school!!! She loved to hear my Inuit culture and taught me how to nake perogies and cabbage rolls!!! And so many other delicious dishes!!! She was so full of life and laughter and could light a room instantly!!! She treated everyone with respect and kindness!!! She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her!!! A rare Jewel in this world and I was blessed to know her!!! Lots of love to see all her family!!! Nahglugivapsi!!!

My deepest sympathy and condolences to Debbie’s family.. Debbie and I shared many happy stroller walks with our daughters who were all just little babes… then off to Debbie’s for some wine! She lovingly used to say that she should hang a shingle with Dale’s address on their garage – as he spent so much time in there with his race car! ( But that left her more time to spend with us girlfriends)- until sadly I had to move away from Lac Du Bonnet 26 years ago.. I always missed Debbie as she was always smiling! She could light up a room with her smile and brighten anyone’s day! I just found out about Debbie’s untimely passing through my daughter, when she came to visit one day. I am still in shock. Debbie truly was an angel on earth.

I can still recall my young daughter running down Leslie street to Deb who had her arms out waiting for her. We had just moved there, and did not know many people. We met alot of people, fast! everyone loved her. we truly met the nicest family with Dale, Deb, Amanda, Ali, Alannah. In fact, we had the last “A” shower at my house! too many memories. Sadly missed, but never forgotten.

So sorry for your loss Dale, daughters, family and friends. Rest peacefully Debbie.
