Alyce Darlene Martin

Age 75 years, of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba

It is with great sadness and immense anguish we announce the tragic passing of our wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother on May 17, 2020. Darlene was born October 24, 1944 in Pine Falls, MB and is predeceased by her parents Arthur and Helen (Campbell) Wold, her brothers Leonard (Bud) Wold, Leslie Wold, Jim Wold, and her sister Jean Wold. She is survived by her husband Stan Martin, daughter Beverley Baker (Dave), son John (Nadine), son Glenn, brothers Percy and Dennis Wold. She is also survived by beloved grandchildren, Cory, Melissa, Jennifer, Hannah, and Garrett; great grandchildren Keira, Violet, Stanley, Summer, and Blake.

Darlene began her life’s journey in Lac du Bonnet before moving to Flin Flon, MB, and eventually to Winnipeg in her teen years. She began her working career with Midwest Diamond Drilling where she found that she had the ability/affinity to program rudimentary computers using punch cards.

Darlene met Stan, her husband of 53 years, while curling at the old Armed Forces curling rink on Kenaston Avenue in Winnipeg. Darlene wasn’t exactly impressed with their first meeting but Stan persisted and won her heart. They were married on September 17, 1966. After having their 3 children, Darlene began a career with Manitoba Health Services in the data entry department and eventually worked her way to the computer help desk. Darlene retired, after completing over 25 years of civil service, and had made many lifelong friends in the process. Everyone who met her could not help but fall in love with her caring nature, sense of humor, and infectious laugh.

Being a charitable person Darlene joined the Order of the Eastern Star where she and Stan made many friends helping the community.

Darlene had always dreamed of living by the water. When she had completed her work career, she and her loving husband Stan built their retirement home on the east shore of Lac du Bonnet. She absolutely loved this beautiful place where her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren would come to see her. Nothing brought her greater joy than to be surrounded by her family.

Some of her favorite things she enjoyed was to sit on her dock, dipping her feet in the water; reading a book; playing cards with Stan, watching reality TV, fishing in the boat, and sitting on her deck looking out over the lake with family/friends.

Darlene was always the eternal optimist and would never give up believing that everyone could change, always seeing the good inside. She made numerous sacrifices so that she could provide a better life to her family. She was truly beautiful on the inside and out. Darlene will be sadly missed by all that knew her. She had so many special relationships with nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends that they are just too many to mention.

The family recognizes that this tragedy is felt by many. They wish to express heartfelt gratitude to all the people who provided aid to Darlene; the first people on scene, rescue/ambulance attendants, and Pinawa Hospital staff.

Darlene you will forever be in our hearts, you have left this earth too early, but your memory and legacy will live on through your family and friends.

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private celebration of life will be held by immediate family.

Flowers are graciously declined. If friends and family so desire, donations can be made in her name to the Eastern Star Chalet.
