1931 ~ 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Elly (Edith) Machel on February 1, 2020. Elly was born in Whitemouth, Manitoba on April 21, 1931, the daughter of Hertha (nee Kohle) and Samuel Gesell. She was predeceased by her husband Alfred Machel of 49 years, who passed away on October 8, 2003 and son Ronald Machel. Elly was the third child of a family of six children. She was predeceased by her parents, and two sisters Irma Antaya and Hildagard Maron. Gary and Alfred Gesell and Linda Penner are her remaining siblings.
Elly and Alfred have two remaining children, Pamela Hawranik (Gerald) and Wilson Machel (Anna). Elly had a close relationship with her two grand-daughters, Melanie Hawranik-Sobering (Steve) and Marcie Hawranik-Loewen (Craig). The girls enjoyed many sleepovers at their grandmother’s home and grew up eating home-baked cakes, cookies, and many other delicious goodies. Elly was a contented great-grandmother who loved to play with her great-grandchildren and spoil them with treats. She leaves Liam Sobering (age 12 years) and Callie Sobering (age 10 years) and Bennett Loewen (5 years old) and Hudson Loewen (2 years old) with sadness.
Elly (Edith) will be remembered for her extensive volunteerism in Whitemouth and Beausejour as a Sunday School teacher, Bible school teacher, Meals-on-Wheels volunteer, Gospel Jam organizer and many other charitable activities. She will always be remembered for her enviable talent for delicious baking for any possible event and fun-loving, high-energy personality.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at 11:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church in Beausejour Manitoba. Interment will follow at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed toward the Beausejour and Area Food Bank.

So sad to hear that my sister Elly passed. Now she can rest. I can remember coming to visit her thinking I would have a vacation from work in Alberta! That wasn’t the case, In the two weeks visiting her we cleaned everything that did not need cleaning including the crawl space under her place that had a clearance of two feet. We had to lay on our backs on a skateboard in order to clean the small area. But it was clean when we were done. Spiders and dust mites didn’t have a chance and learned really quickly to just move next door. I will miss her

Pamela and family,
I met Elly a long time ago, when I was a student, I did homecare for your grandmother. I would come for overnight, so your Mom could get a good sleep. She was so kind, and always had a wonderful snack for me – her zucchini cake was the best and I still have her recipe.
