1919 ~ 2018
Surrounded by the chatter of family, Mom passed away on Saturday, February 24th in the early afternoon.
Mom was born in Whitemouth on the family farm on October 2, 1919, the 8th of 9 children born to John and Augusta Herntier.
She married Eddie Malkoske in October, 1937. These “best friends” spent the next 69 years together. They raised four children Judy (Don) Cowell (both of whom predeceased Mom), Brenda (George) Pluchinski, Russell (Sherril) Malkoske and Lois (Rick Schultz). Family grew to include grandkids Kevin (Karen) Cowell, Melanie (Lynn) Fraser, Jeff (Melinda) Pluchinski, Jody (Roy) McMullen, Joel (Kathy) Malkoske, Kyle Malkoske, Travis (Tanis) Malkoske, Cory (Alison Remple) Malkoske, Lisa (Roger) Hristovski, and Karla (Bastian) Firmbach. Great grandkids are Cole and Taylor Pluchinski, Jon McMullen, Emma and Maggie Malkoske, Eric and Lucas Malkoske and Odin and Nyle Firmbach.
While she is survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family, she is the last of her generation having been predeceased by all her siblings, in-laws and most friends. That was a great sadness to Mom. She especially missed daughter Judy and her hubby Don. There was not a day that went by that Mom did not mention missing Dad.
Mom loved looking after others, especially Dad. That need to care for him spilled over onto all of us. We will dearly miss her caring and concern.
Mom had never lived more than two miles from the farm where she was born. Suggesting Whitemouth was not important to her would be a serious mistake. Those in our home town will miss her as much as we do.
We would like to thank the staff at the Whitemouth Personal Care Home for the care and compassion they showed our mother.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Whitemouth.
No flowers please, but donations to the Redeemer Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Any act of kindness to someone or someplace you love would also make Mom very happy.

My heartfelt condolences to Ruth’s entire family! She was like a second mom to me and visiting her in Whitemouth while in her home while Ed was still alive, and when they moved to assisted living and finally the personal care home – over a 2o year span – I never missed a summer to visit Ruth. Her sense of humour always amazed me and my brother Paul who often accompanied me on my visits. In my growing up years in Whitemouth I remember Ruth as making the best popcorn balls at Halloween. And she was instrumental in convincing Mrs Alex Hill (who had the only television in Whitemouth at that time) in letting Brenda, my sister Anita and I to watch Horse Opera at their house on Saturday afternoons. I will miss my visits with Ruth dearly and am so sorry I cannot be there to pay my last respects to a great lady. Brenda, Russell, Lois – my thoughts are with you and your families. Much love from Edna Zurbuchen (nee Hlady.). Xo.

Last July I was in Winnipeg and managed a day trip to Whitemouth with Janet for a visit with Auntie Ruth. She did well to figure out who I was and we had a good little visit. Thinking of her always brings back memories of blueberry picking, swimming in the river behind the house, and the warm welcome we always felt when we visited as kids. The caring portrait of her conveyed through the obituary says it well.
Margaret and I won’t be able to get there for the funeral, but we offer our prayers and will pause in remembrance of our Auntie Ruth.
Blessings,
David Hunter
